FSAA costs performance, Aniso is free?

Recommended Posts

This is really weird - like A1, the graphic settings here make little sense.

In A1,2x FSAA enabled or disabled made about 1 or 2 frames difference at an average framerate between 25 and 30 FPS. Sometimes it wasn't even possible to tell since it would depend on what exactly you looked at.

Aniso on low (2x) the same - hardly notable. However, going higher could mean a notable loss of frame up to 5 FPS.

In A2, using lower settings (but same resolution) I can get 25 to 30 avg. too, with dips into the low 20s.

But: Enabling FSAA to low with the latest patch costs 5 or 6 frames. On the other hand I just benchmarked my standard mission again with Aniso to very high - previously off - and it didn't make a single frame difference!

Is it possible that certain parts of a graphic card (for example shading or texel units) might bottleneck out while others end up "idle" and can take additional load at no extra cost?
