Demo: Death Valley: am I missing something?

I am giving the demo a try right now. I am doing the second mission in which I (we?) have to capture a city or something. The thing is... apart from that order (capture the city whatever it's called) I am getting no orders at all... I've got the feeling I am out there all on my own. No one tells me what to do. I don't know what's my team (do I have a team...?) and who is the leader and who I should follow...

So I walk to the city and lay down beside the structure 'we' have to capture: there is a green bar that disappears after lying there sometime, and that's it...? Why are all those other soldiers there? Seems there is hardly anything happening (although there are more than enough vehicles driving around).

I seem to be missing some guidance...? Shouldn't I be ordered to do something specific...? I've got the feeling I might was as well be there all on my own and all I've got to do is walk to whatever I've got to capure and that's it. I think I shot one guy in the far away disctance and that's about all.

What am I supposed to do, really...? I feel lost out there...

I've figured you can vote yourself commander and order your troop around to some extent, but a lot of the time they don't move when I tell them to and I'm really not sure what to do to win the map.

It would be great if someone who knows what they are doing could record a video tutorial so us noobs can see how it's done.

Yes. As it is now I really don't see why I should buy this game... It doesn't look good (nothing is sharp, everywhere things pop up all the time, animations quite often are quite awfull, voices are really, really the worst I've heard in a game ever) and I've got no clue what to do. :confused:

I've figured out buying units and controlling them reasonably well, and I've got all three towns captured, but I'm at a loss as to how to destroy the enemy base. At this point I'm just rolling around it in an APC with a couple tanks backing me up. What am I missing here?

Ah, all it took was making my tank crew get out so I could get in an shoot the HQ myself. Odd the AI wouldn't do it when I told them to attack. Anyway, it still would be cool to see a video of someone who really knows what they are doing play though the mission.

i'having the same problems. i voted myself to be commander. i have some units, some humvees and some light APCs. thats it. can i command them? no, i can not.

I change to the map and try to click on the nato-symbols on the map, just as i did in the "bootcamp mission", but the icons aren't clickable. nothing. :mad:

calling up the command menu lets me buy more units, but i can't give any orders.

How did you manage to give orders or even drive an APC yourself? Nothing seems to work :j:

On that playthrough I didn't vote myself commander. When in the spawn after the AI built the small vehicle factory, I rolled my mouse wheel to buy units and got an HMMV with a turret, then went out and got kills and captures until I had enough money to go back to HQ to buy the APC and tanks. Then it was just a matter of finding the enemy base and destroying it.

As commander you have to go to commander view to take control of your units, though I can't say what button it is off hand since I play left handed and rebind everything.

I got the whole commanding units thing down, but I seem to totally suck at this mission.

I move my APCs and stuff into the first town to attack whatever's there and they basically just get wiped out. Also, they only start you with enough resources to either get a few APCs or some more infantry, so I'm left with a bunch of vehicles but barely enough infantry to form a single squad. Salvaging also doesn't get me that much money.

Hey guys. I have just been playing the demo, encountered all the same problems you have, yet i have figured them all out and the game is brilliant.

You must buy units as the AI commander builds base structures. Barracks gives you general soldiers, Helipad gives helicopters etc. You must gain money to BUY units by gaining kills. push enter or scroll button while in your hq to buy units and weapons depending on the structures present.

you can control any unit you purchase, i dont know why someone above mentioned they werent able too. confusing.

The reason the units you buy get massacred so easily, is because you have not bought a fire team leader or a squad leader to move with them. If you do this you can hear the fire team leader or squad leader barking commands and keeping them on their toes as they move and they are extremley efffective. It enables them to move properly, attain the correct stances and pull back when in trouble and defend each other without you having to do it with complicated commands.

How to change to commander : enter map, click on "voting" and click your name. As commander you are in charge of base building, so you can buy the structures to gain the units you want without waiting for the AI to decide its the right time.

Destroying the base is BIZARRE. for some reason my helicopter says "negative" when i order him to attack hq, as do my AT specialists, yet i can destroy them with one SMAW shot. It is a pain as you have to keep returning to rearm every pot! Im sure this is not the case in the full version, it must be a pre release bug.

One thing that gets me is the abilty to get your team to rearm from the supply trucks. They shout "OUT OF AMMO!" but refuse to grab more from teh truck parked next to them. any help on that would be great!

It is the same in the full version, but you can hop in one of the bigger gunned vehicles yourself and make short work of it.
