Post processing effects. Headache.

I dont know if it is just my card and hardware configuration, but setting post processing effects to max (demo version), the sky is almost all white and while zooming to adquire targets, things start to get a bit blurred. I had to low that setting or just disable it because RL headache trying to search for enemies.

What are your experience with post processing effects?. What exactly do or try to do those effects?.

Turn it off, pp exists mostly to hide ugly graphics over the distance, like low detail lods, low textures, aliasing, etc.

Thats what rockstar did to GTA IV on the consoles to make it look "good", they hid the ugly stuff with a blur filter.

Arma II is the same, if your setup cant handle high settings, 3d resolution or antialiasing and you dont want those trees in the distance to look so bad.. pp is the cheap alternative, but it hurts the eyes anyway and the gameplay impact is huge since it makes it harder to identify the baddies shoooting at you from far away.

General PC gamer responce to post processing is: "Get rid of teh blur crap and give us antialiasing ffs!"

I don't agree with that.

Firstly, PP effects are ressource hogs too.

Secondly, pp effects are not meant to replace anti-aliasing or any thing else or to hide the bad LOD in the first place (maybe it was the devs intent somehow). They are supposed to improve the visuals, whether you have AA on or off.

There is a coktail of effects in the post-process effects setting :

- Motion blur, supposed to make the sensation of movements more dramatic/cinematographic.

- Bloom, generally presented as a cheap version of HDR but it has a different effect. It adds a halo to the image, mostly visible around bright parts, which produces a softer atmosphere. When it's over used (like in most games) it "burns" the bright parts making them all white where there should be tint variations.

- Depth of field, meant to reproduce the nice looking depth of field effect of cameras (think of macro photos). It makes for some nice visuals but is generally destracting the player if not used very carefully (i.e.: Great in cut-scenes, not in normal gameplay).

In fact all these effects are meant to reproduce physical properties of the eye or of cameras. Sadly, they are rarely used with good parcimony.

As to how good or bad they are used in Arma2, I don't really know as the game becomes a slideshow when I activate them. :)
