Fuel air explosives

Do you guys think they could be useful/interesting/fun ingame?

Found some good pics of russian ones, I may model a couple of them, one for each side, then I just need the proper visual effect... is anybody interested in this project?  tounge2.gif

Hell yeah. Although it could be a little overkill in most games.

Do they ever use them like daisy cutters? To clear areas for landing zones?

Also what would be cool is thermobaric warheads. Shots for weapons like the SMAW that do massive pressure damage in buildings, killing occupants without much unwanted large area damage.

I can imagine visual effects being an interesting challenge for both fuel air and thermobaric.

Loki - scripts has a fuel air script, it lookslike a large explosion in mid air with cluster bomb type effects.

you could with permission attach that to your weapon

Thanks Daniel&Eble, my work would just be giving you guys nice models, then I need someone willing to give them the proper config and visual FXs. Yes, mostly used for clearing landing zones, mine clearance, antepersonel and so on... May be a bit overpowered for ArmA? Just give me feedbacks and I'll see if start modeling those or not smile_o.gif Not willing to model something useless smile_o.gif

I dunno would be cool, I dunno if its useless, could make a c&c generals styled mission where you call in special weapons like fuel air bombs and stuff tounge2.gif

The F-15 I converted had a modified clusterbomb script from Franze's F/A 18, it drops 65 bomblets, so a smallish fuel air bomb would be fine, you can tone down the explosive effects so it isn't overkill.

I'd say go for it, the more weapon options the better.

You'd have to find a clever way of implementing the damage, which is the most important bit. You need a set "splash" radius for each Fuel Air Explosive (FAE) weapon, around the size of a house in some cases. But it needs to have the destructive power to kill any infantry, light vehicle (occupants at least) or normal buildings in that area.

Am I right in thinking that thermobaric weapons shouldn't be too effective against sealed MBTs and similar vehicles?

I'm not a military expert but I suppose that all would depend on the weight and power of the bomb. It uses a mixture of heat and pressure to destroy things, I bet they can develop enought pressure to kill light armored vehicles too, or at least getting close to it. The special FX of the explosion is what worries me the most, actually... crazy_o.gif
