Baldrik 0 Posted December 3, 2001 Hi all, just got the game today (Gold edition) and it is pi**ing me off. I keep getting random lockups when playing. I have read the FAQ, read all the posts here and tried anything that might help (such as setting swapfile to 1000) my video card is PCI so the AGP stuff is no good, I have tried all the different settings in preferences, still nothing helps. My system is: Win XP pro 512 Mb SDRAM Abit BE6-II MoBo Voodoo 5 PCI Pentium III 700 C'mon guys.. help me out a newbie here please
Trip Hazzard 0 Posted December 4, 2001 The only advice I can give--based on very recent personal experience--is to ensure all your drivers are up to date. I had freeze problems (with a different set-up) and in the end it came down to the fact that I hadn't updated my graphics drivers. I also have XP (Home rather than Pro). If you haven't already done it, give it a shot.
Baldrik 0 Posted December 4, 2001 Hey Spyders, thanks for that. The drivers I am using are the only ones I could find for XP/Voodoo5 that actually work. Oh well, back to trawling the net again
theavonlady 2 Posted December 4, 2001 Is your motherboard based on the Via chipset?
troop 0 Posted December 4, 2001 No, theavonlady, on the board mentioned is an Intel BX chipset. Same as on Abit BH/BF-6 Those are a little dated('97-'98) now, but under normal circumsdances know to be _rocksolid_ with most games/applications. Yeah, still an great board! Running an BF-6 in my second machine with an P3/850, Elsa Gladiac(GF2/32MB/AGP) and Soundblaster 1024 Live Player;..latest drivers/DX8.1 on either Win98SE or WinME, I get occasional lockups; either with or without that nasty highpitched whining sound hang. (OFP, but also other games, I test on the machine) I would suggest, turning ACPI off in the (latest version of - code UH?) BIOS, let Windows(which version?) rearange the IRQ's upon startup and maybe turning CAS read down to 3 cycles rather than 2-2-2. (3-2-2) That _should_ fix the most annoying lockups at the expense of some performance. Approx. 5-10%, but stable. Edit: Oh ja;..and for testing, turn off BIOS and VIDEO caching in the Bios... --- Hope it helps. (Edited by troop at 6:22 pm on Dec. 4, 2001)

Baldrik 0 Posted December 5, 2001 Well I've tried various video drivers, BIOS settings, XP tweaks (e.g swapfile size etc.) I have even found CloneCD and loaded that, still locks up all over the place. All that to play a poxy game!! I dunno what to try next but thanks to those who have replied and for the ideas in the other posts. I'll keep looking... Mister Frag 0 Posted December 5, 2001 Regarding CloneCD, I hope you meant to say that you unloaded that, as it is known to cause problems with the SafeDisc copy-protection engine.
Baldrik 0 Posted December 5, 2001 I was so friggin frustrated, I INSTALLED CloneCD, Maxdamage (I think) cured his lockup's by doing it. Anyway, it made no difference, I have uninstalled it again and cleaned the reg. No difference eitherway
Baldrik 0 Posted December 6, 2001 Well, I got the game working, sort of... I uninstalled the game, deleted the folders/files left behind <rolleyes> , cleared out the registry of any codemaster/OPF references and reinstalled the first CD, this gave me Ver.1. So far so good, no crashes, continues after finishing a mission, it's great! I read somewhere Avonlady reckons there will be a patch for 1.3 sometime in December... is that true? I can't wait to try the RH campaign I love the game when it actually lets you play

I bought the Gold Edition, thats the original game AND Red Hammer plus all the addons etc. HTH Incidentally, Ver 1 still locks up (reboot needed, no keys at all, same as Ver 1.3) but not as often, actually got an hour before a lock tonight. Baldrik 0 Posted December 16, 2001 OK, I seem to have cured the lockup problem... wierd2u2 posted a message http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....tart=17 (page 2) and, as always, I am willing to try most things, so I took one of my 256meg ram sticks out leaving me with just one 256 stick and voila! no more lock up's... so far. I have played 6 missions one after the other and played RH missions too with no problem, it used to lock up after a max of 20 mins before. So, thanks Weird2u2 for the idea. Hope this helps someone else
