looks like i'll be going to the store to return it. annoying that they'd send out such a game stopping bug and even patches haven't fixed it.

It's not a bug. It's a technical impediment as well as other software (CD burning utilities) replacing Windows I/O routines and potentially interfering with what otherwise would work.

Did you even try those things said in the FAQ?  confused.gif

Well... It's not my loss, it's your loss for not trying simple things to get the game to work.

Of course i tried the stuff in the FAQ. I'm not just gonna take a awesome game like this back without trying. The game looks awesome and i would like to play it but everytime i try to load it up it messes up so it's kinda hard.

If your PC's motherboard is based on the VIA chipset, read this FAQ item first.(didn't try)

If you are running any Virtual CD device software (or other CD-ROM tools), such as Daemon Tools, you should uninstall it.(to my knowlegde i have no such software)

The game will not run from a mapped network CD-ROM drive. (doesn't apply to me)

If you have PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) you may also have to uninstall this.(Pretty Good Privacy? no idea. guessing i don't have it)

Try unchecking the DMA box found under your CD/DVD-ROM properties settings, under Windows' CONTROL PANELS>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER. (did)

The ASPI drivers for your CD Drive may be corrupt. (Read all about this in this FAQ item). (downloaded newest version)

If you have a Sound Blaster sound card, disable the CD Detector program.(have sound blaster, didn't know where to find it. I looked though so you can't yell at me for not trying)

Try changing your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM from a slave device to a master device.(i'm guessing it's a master already. didn't know where to look to find out)

Ensure that you have the latest patch from our website.(did)

i tried atleast. maybe i'm being a newbie or something and missed something obvious to people who know more then me.

Jess and Obi,

I too am having the same problem. I just bought the Gold Edition and I've installed all the patches, and I still get a "memory could not be read error" while the logo screen is displayed.

I've read all the FAQs, followed every troubleshooting piece of advice posted on this board, and the game still doesn't work!

My computers specs are ATI Radeon 64 VIVO (fully patched) w/ DX 8.1, 512 MB RAM, 450 - 750 MB of Win2k swap space, ONE 72x cd-rom drive with no applications like Nero running, Win2k, 500 MHZ Pentium III, and a 36 gig ultra2 scsi hard drive. I would hope that a game like operation flashpoint would work on that system, not to mention I tried it on other PCs in my house and still doesn't work!

It looks like I'm taking the game back as well.

I bought and installed ofp yesterday and I get a brief ofp logo and it crashes with the following message. I even tried it on another PC and the same thing happened. Both machines are good and fast with windows98SE, one being a p3 750 , voodoo5 , 256Mgs ram and the other p3 500, voodoo3,  256mgs ram. I have tried some of the FAQs to try and solve the problem, but no help. ...could I have gotten a bad disk? The game installs OK, but won't run. I don't have any problems running any other game. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank God that others are having the same problem as I am. I have been scouring the web for two days now trying to find if anyone had similar problems, yet, no one has. I too have tried everything in the vague problem solving FAQ. Nothing, of course, works. I even deleted all of my .TMP files. No dice. Was this Gold addition nothing but a bug?

Did you actually update your ASPI layer or did you skip that step?

Search The FAQ for "aspi". ASPI was mentioned on the items I previously referred you to.

This bit of software, or the lack of it to be precise, has been the cause of many a player's failure to play, install or update OFP.

I wish I could get my hands on the latest version of FORCEASPI mentioned in The FAQ's ASPI item. The bottom line is that the ASPI layer should be installed even if none currently exists on your machine.

More on this later. Must go ....................

I look there and I did do it befor and this is what I found.

NOTE: Do NOT install ASPI32.EXE with Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, Easy CD Creator 4.x, or with Windows Media Player 7.0. If are using either of these Operating Systems or if you have any one of these applications, you should not be installing or using this file.

I am useing Windows ME so I can not use this is there something other that I can do THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, that's what Adaptec says but not so numerous programmers and geeks who looked into the matter. That's what the reference to the FORCEASPI utility is about in the FAQ item. Also see this page at GRC.COM (wonderful site) about his attempts at writing ASPI drivers and Adaptec's threats against him.

More technical information and links about ASPI can be found here.

Have you tried the ASPI version update utility available from The FAQ item on ASPI? The README says:

"2) If there is NOT previous version run aspi.bat

-this will copy files to needed to upgrade"

In other words, if it's not found, they should be installed.

Woooooooooooooo!

BIS, is this a fluke or have you gotten a lot of reports of these?

Sometimes the solution is too simple. I had a little bit of install problems with Motocross Madness 2 because my cd drive wouldn't read the disk. Luckily I had a cdrw drive too and it worked. Sometimes the cheapest cd drives won't read cds that are heavily protected.
