Error: Failed to create surface texture

Recommended Posts

Hello.  My Problem is what the topic is (Error: Failed to create surface texture).

Specs:

Windows XP Pro 64Bit

8GB DDR2 800MHz

AMD AM2 5200+ Duel Core

(New) ATI HD3870 512mb DDR4 PCI-E

(Old) MSI Nvidia 8600GT 256mb PCI-E

Motherboard MSI K9N Neo-F

ArmA Version 1.14 (steam)

I just got a ATI HD3870 512mb DDR4 PCI-E video card.  Upgraded from Nvidia 8600 256mb PCi-E video card.  The game was working fine before I upgraded (not a single crash).  Granted the last time i played was about 2 weeks before i got the new card.  I did install some new games since then.  After I installed the new card I got the latest ATI drives 8.7 and tried out Arma.  The game took a long time to load up and when it did i can't see the back ground movie/screen shoots.  I could make out the shapes of the icons but no text.  So once I quit the game I started to think besides the card what has changed.  So i uninstalled the two games since the last time i played (Age of Conan and demo of a race car game).  I then try ArmA again and the same thing.  From there I went to these forms and see if anyone had some sort of problem with ATI card or version of driver (I know someone that has this card and it works no problem).

After read though some post I found the ArmA makes error log.  So I went to the log and found out that its says "Error: Failed to create surface texture".  I uninstall ArmA, delete all files from my system (under the steam folder, Regedit windows registry, User folders (the hidden ones) and reload the game.  After the game was install I tryed it again.  Something happen - i can hear the system working hard then no textures on the menu of the game.  I then check the error log and same error.  i then updated the game to 1.14 (was at 1.08) and got the same thing.

So uninstall all the drivers i had for ATI and tryed different version 8.4 to 8.7 (uninstall and delete all ATI files that get installed on the system). Same thing happen with ever version of driver when trying to play the game.

At this point i don't know what do. I have search this problem on Google, this form and other websites with no luck.   I bought this card to play Age of Conan but hope (and it should/does) help other games like ArmA out.   Also before any of you suggest it NO i'm not formatting my computer.  Besides ArmA I have no  problems with any games that I have (Age of Conan, CoD4, TF2, IL2-1946, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, ect....).  I have seen great increase in FPS for all of my games. Haven't had any problems with windows it self (no blue screens, crashes or freezing).  I have a feeling that it is a problems with a setting with drivers and the game, but what i don't know.

Any help would be nice

Thanks

(Update to problem)

So I decided to take a screen shoot of my problem.  The screen shoot is of the main screen in ArmA when you first load into the game.  Also down below you will a copy of what shows up in the arma.RPT file when trying to play.  The file got to about 11mb

Hmm weird ...your problem resembles back with the beta when using the wrong shortcut.

I have very similiar system and don't have the problem.I assume its Steam Version related.

I am afraid until we release a next patch your only options are as outlined in 64-bit Windows with 4GB RAM, black loading screen wiki article.

Well I did what the wiki say about add the memory limitation to the msconfig and it work.  I now can play ArmA no problem textures and all.  Now I have two startup option one for ArmA and normal windows.  It never entered my mind that it would be a RAM thing,  since it work no problem with 8600GT and 8GB of Ram.  Something in the ATI drivers 64bit must do something for system memory management for textures and what not.  Thank you so much Suma for the quick replay,  I was also right I notice a big performance in the game with this card.

Thanks
