Total PC Lockup. Random, hard to duplicate.

Recommended Posts

It seems as though sometimes I can play Arma for 2 hours without my PC completely locking up. Then other times it happens in less than 10 minutes. By complete lockup, I mean no movement, no crash to desktop, just completely frozen. Alt+F4, Alt+tab do not work. The only option is to literally unplug my PC or hold the power button. This does not happen with other games and heat is NOT a heat issue. I can't be specific as to "when" this started happening, as I have been on a large "Arma Break" since essentially Arma 1.05. The game is correctly patched and installed (as I just reinstalled it, the patch process was as follows, 1.0 to 1.5, 1.5 to 1.8, 1.8 to 1.14. I've run the game without addons and the freeze still occurs.

Q6600 2.4GHz

8800GTX (Latest Patch)

4GB Ram

Windows XP Professional SP2

600W Corsair PSU

XFi-Elite Pro Soundcard

Ideas? Thanks.

I had the same.

I thought it was game specific. Then it generalized, little by little, to other applications as well.

Explanations for this are multiple. Often, can be a PSU getting old and beginning to work too hard, or something else getting old.

For me, it was a combination of PSU and CPU overclock. Changed PSU, stopped overclocking, no more issue, even if the system is not as stable as I would expect.

This thing is often the symptom of some hardware problem, even though it's not general to any application

I was having same issue a while back. posted here about BSOD randomly in or after playing arma. completely random. I think I found a solution to this issue. Friend suggested that ArmA doesnt have good garbage collection system so ram gets filled fast. might try a program that cleans the ram every few minutes or so and see if that helps. Not sure what programs are out there that do that since my friend made mine. You might also try running speedfan to check the computer over. Ill also point out that I havent had my computer freeze, crash or bluescreen since.

problem with sound:

soundEnableEAX=1;

soundEnableHW=0;

if i have setup these settings they game is running pretty good.

but u can´t hear far.

-------------------------------------------------------------

soundEnableEAX=1;

soundEnableHW=1;

if i put the hardwareacceleration on, i can hear all pretty far and good but the game hangs after a time.

if i press control+alt+delete, i switch after a while to desctop and than i can get back ingame. i can do this 2-3 times, than the whole maschine locked up.

i have the creative x-fi music, and that card can manage hardwareaccelleration normaly. but why is that not working in arma.

the diffrence between soundEnableHW on / off is so much.

its like u hear good or u are deaf.

is there a workaround that u can switch hardware-acc. on, without crashing the game ??

thx for help.

Even if the RAM piled up, I have 4GB - a little more than your average cookie.

The PSU is fairly new, only 7 weeks or so. I don't over clock and have an overly sufficient amount of airflow in this full tower case. This issue has not spilled over into any other programs, and is completely isolated to Arma.

victor:

you have the "XFi-Elite Pro Soundcard".

so try to switch off hardware acceleration in the audiosettings.

leave eax on.

hope u have these newest driver: Creative ALchemy 1.10.01

for me its working without lock up, ... but u hear less in game. but its playable.

check that.
