Sid 0 Posted February 28, 2002 We all now Operation Flashpoint has a some-what weak community. Please don't correct me if I'm wrong. I was thinking since oxygen was being released, the community would kick itself up in high gear, but now I know otherwise. I understand why you'd want people to pay for the thing, to keep Operation Flashpoint "clean" of stuff like Star Wars.. THINK ABOUT IT. You are releasing the tools SO WE CAN MODIFY THE GAME. If we want Star Wars that is our own choice. Now, before banning, deleting, or... eating this post, hear me out a litttle more: I can understand that that isn't the only reason. You spent 7 years developing this game, and you like it the way it is. -For someone to modify your master piece is well, kinda rude to you, isn't it? TO THE FORUM PEOPLE: We brought this down upon us, think about it, BIS made these tools for US, we were the ones that wanted them. Even IF we have to pay for them, it won't be much. All I'm saying is, it would be smarter if BIS would release them for free. It would also help Operation Flashpoint more, and that's what everyone wants in the end, isn't it? Go ahead and flame me. -You have my permission. -Sid
Damage Inc 0 Posted February 28, 2002 Hmmm? It looks like you haven't read this: However, we've decided to not distribute the tools freely on the Internet now and we want to focus on supporting selected projects that will be really beneficial for whole OpFlash community. Emphasizing the word now. They may be released for the public later.
Sid 0 Posted February 28, 2002 So what your saying is: They'll only be on the internet NOW and in the public LATER but we still have to pay for them?
nordin dk 0 Posted February 28, 2002 I think what they're saying is that, so as to avoid a bunch of half-assed MODS and commercial exploitations, they want to have control over who can use the tools, for now.
Sid 0 Posted February 28, 2002 Thanks for clearing that up, I hope "now" is soon......
madmike 0 Posted February 28, 2002 Hey stop giving BIS hassle, they made the darn game I think they should decide what they want. If you think about it look how much support they are giving us by releasing patches, upgrades, new campaigns. They also try to respond to some of our questions and improve the game with things we suggest. take a look at what they said will be in the Resistance mod, a motorbike, industrial buildings, improved graphics, etc, I have seen all of these suggested by the comunity. Also if you have a good enough model to import why dont you contact BIS, its worth I try and Im sure they will be more than fair. DO you believe your crap at making models then? its not like they are saying they will never release it, they said only they are going to support projects. It doesnt say mods, like different campaigns
Maddock 0 Posted March 1, 2002 You cannot question the follow-up and support of the BIS team. Maruk has made clear their position and has been quick to respond to these threads and assure us a wider release will happen. It's all good people!
Drewus 0 Posted March 1, 2002 Yeah they can control who does, and doesn't have the right to use the tools..... until such time as the tools become available on warez sites, then everyone can use them.

I don't know where in the world you got that from. They are limiting distribution to people who submit a project to make an addon/mod that BIS deems to be a quality mod/addon, AND will promise not to leak the tools. Now, what's the problem with that? Somebody has a decent mod, tell bis what it is you want to make, get the tools and don't leak them. Damned, the people that come in here half-cocked and screaming before they know what the hell is going on just amaze me.

MDRZulu 0 Posted March 1, 2002 Madmike you have to think about the credibility of BIS when you read what they say and once again by their latest public comment they have lowered the credibility once again. You can take what they say however you want I'm not your boss but I just wanted to point out to you if you didnt notice that they dont stick to their word very often. Personally I think atleast 2 of their decision in their latest post will be changed based on thier previous ones. Also if you were to look at a graph of OFP user morale you would see a big steep drop on Feb 28th and I think I dont think it will ever come back up to even half of what it was. Agua 0 Posted March 1, 2002 They never promised[b/] that it would be released. The statement, to the best of my recollection, was Marek said he would "do everything within [his] power" to have the tool released by the end of February. This is what they were able to do for now, so please, be reasonable. We'll get the mods and if your mods are within whatever acceptable paramaters BIS allows for issuance of the tools, you'll get the tools. You have to rely on their good faith, and they've shown a ton of it. I don't see any loss of credibility. I see people who don't know how to read what was said by BIS and build what WAS said into something bigger than it was.
Sid 0 Posted March 1, 2002 *Sid mightly fought, but he eventually got beat down into his grave* -I've been playing Stronghold too much.... So you mean, we, don't, have to pay for it??? I don't CARE when it's released, i just don't want to pay for it. After all, I waited a year and a ahlf FOR A PATCH for Sven Co-Op for Half-Life, and I waited 3 years for Tribes 2... wich they ruined with all the patches... and they took away the forums... I mean, we payed for the game, wich means we payed for the community... I want my 20 bucks back... anyways... Thanks for clearing this up, and give Stronghold a try, most of you would like it.... Ok, I'm getting WAY TO off topic, what I'm trying to say is, thanks. I didn't realize we don't have to pay for it. I can wait, i can wait.
Diniter 0 Posted March 1, 2002 I wouldn't read too much into "now" it could just as easily mean never. I know they are working on the newest addon and in upgrading the game to support larger textures and better netcode (supposedly), and fixing things here and there. In my opinion most will not hold out for what they really think is worth waiting for (to play something that is different, free, and constantly developed by people at home who still care to do it ). The alternative isn't as attractive to wait that long til the game can be modded, hence they could drop the game. The bottom line is the $ addon won't appeal nearly as much as releasing the tools first. This is a big mistake if it'll go down like that; and it will fall flat over time ,like soda.
