Archie1 0 Posted October 2, 2007 Hey, I just bought the game on sunday but I seem to crash all the time and I'm running with a good rig? Any ideas, please help if you can as this seems like an awesome game.
Chris Death 0 Posted October 2, 2007 Maybe you can become a little bit more precise about the: good rig? What OS/CPU/GPU/RAM/Soundcard Which drivers? What kind of Crash? With or without errormessage? ~S~ CD

jasono 0 Posted October 2, 2007 Does ArmA freeze or just disapear?
Archie1 0 Posted October 2, 2007 No freeze just Crash to Desktop.
jasono 0 Posted October 2, 2007 Okay. Close ArmA if it's running and then go to the following directory and delete the following file. C:\Documents and Settings\YOURWINDOWSUERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA\arma.RPT Change YOURWINDOWSUERNAME to your windows username. If your not sure, you can always go through the directorys above manually until you find the file. Once deleted restart arma and continue to play as normal until it crashes. Once it crashes open that file above (ArmA would have recreated it). As long as you don't have any mod folders running or a mission requireing addon, the log file should show you the problem. Might be confusing so post it here and someone else might be able to tell you what it is.
Archie1 0 Posted October 3, 2007 Sorry didnt follow that last post, I cant find it at all. Maybe because I use vista?
clay-pigeon 0 Posted October 12, 2007 Same problem for me. Game crashes all the time. Sometimes it shows up the default "Application stopped workin.. blah.. blah.." but sometimes is just closes and jump back to desktop without any notification. I have all ther newest drivers, no 3rd party ARMA addons, vista home basic with visualization set to max performance, intel e6750, 2gb ram, wd raptor hdd, 8800gtx; x-fi sound card... So I think i have all the stuffs that expect this game to run properly but it crashes on my system continuously. The only thing I figured out if I decrease visual settings to low/medium in the game it crashes "only" in every 1-1,5 hrs. As if it made some memory leak or something. It seems to me as if this game was still a beta release despite the several patches that already came out for this buggy game. I'm a developer myself but if i released a product like this i would be in serious trouble. And my repuation would be nowhere...
ArMoGaDoN 0 Posted October 13, 2007 Lol, I agree entirely. Microsoft and the driver manufacturers should hang their head in shame. Vista was never claimed to be a supported platform for ArmA, Microsoft released an OS with shoddy first-generation drivers, the peripheral manufacturers are doing their best to get all drivers etc. working but as a dev yourself you know the minefield that MS has opened up with their new OS. It'll be at least 6 months more or up to a year before Vista could begin to be called a stable platform judgeing from previous OS's track records. Make certain you have ALL the latest drivers, including the chipset updates, ALL the latest DirectX, the latest motherboard BIOS updates, the latest firmware for your peripherals, etc., then when ArmA still won't run I suggest you go flame Microsoft for shafting yet more development teams (driver/hardware manufacturers included in that list) by breaking loads of backward-compatibility that they probably published the 'safe practice to avoid backward compatibilty problems' details of in the first place, then blatantly ignored all over again. You know as well as the rest of us the 'lock-in' strategy that MS are now employing to coerce/force us to "upgrade" to Vista (LOL upgrade), you chose Vista so now you must deal with the problems that good ole MS have caused. To slam BIS over problems that Microsoft have caused you is totally unacceptable in my opinion. Honestly, I think it's almost a miracle that anything other than notepad will run AT ALL under Vista, and despite the fact that it is officially an unsupported OS for ArmA the devs have been quietly trying to get it to work anyway, even as far as working with the driver manufacturers, as a favour to 'new-OS-adpoters' such as your good self. This is hassle and work that they're in no way bound to do, but have been doing it anyway from what I have been reading here. So, either dual boot with XP, as many do, or go read through all the forum posts about Vista-compatibility and find the workarounds that many others running Vista have been playing with to get ArmA running on that platform, with some success recently it would seem from the posts. I know a few folks online that run Vista and ArmA now, when before they had to dual boot XP - so it can be done with some effort on your own part. If you don't want to put in the effort to get it running under unsupported Vista, then your answer is to dual boot XP or nag Microsoft to cure the aggravation they are causing you (good luck in that!). Your decision. Enough of flame posts such as the one before this - as a dev you should easily appreciate the causes of the problems you have been experiencing. I say again: Microsoft and the driver manufacturers should hang their head in shame.
clay-pigeon 0 Posted October 13, 2007 Well, I understand your reaction since I forgot to mention one important thing. I have this problem ONLY with ArmA at the moment. The only other game with which I experienced similar problem was LOTRO beta. Secondly, I don't see on the box any notification that this game doesn't support vista. This operation system was released more than eight months ago. I can understand why the game wasn't vista ready at release but another complete game can be made in six months... not eight. It is the easiest to blame MS and their recent operating system than make a product that work proberly. I don't mind the several small gameplay/graphics bugs I encouneterd in the game since game engine is very complex and I know it is almost impossible to make everything to work perfectly but I expect it to run at least. Maybe BI should finish the base game first before they start to develop expansion packs or another follow up.
Mr_Tea 0 Posted October 13, 2007 You all should not forget, that Vista is no supported OS to play ArmA on. The system requirements are: OS must be Win2K or WinXP. So don`t freak out because ArmA refuses to work with Vista. Follow the advises other users give, or install an supported OS.
clay-pigeon 0 Posted October 13, 2007 XP is "recommended" OS according to box and it doesn't mean "XP only" but I don't go into this pointless argument further since it won't solve my problem.
ArMoGaDoN 0 Posted October 13, 2007 On ArmA box: Minimum specification: Windows XP or Windows 2000 and DirectX 9 Recommended specification: Windows XP and DirectX 9 I see no 'made for Vista' logo anyplace, do you? (thank gawd!) You are making the assumption that Microsoft have made everything backwards compatible in Vista. This is very obviously not the case. All developers and users SHOULD be able to make this assumption safely, as Microsoft are ALWAYS giving us the spiel that this is so, and to be fair: to a large extent it often is. If only they could fully deliver on their promises then situations such as this would never arise. Vista isn't just an upgrade of their older OSes. Much has changed in the system under the hood, and can cause problems, even if their guidelines were followed to avoid such problems. Vista is not a platform on which ArmA was designed for or on which it is supposed to run, unless Microsoft had made it so via downwards compatibility. End of story. No doubt Vista or whatever crummy OS we'll be forced to accept will be supported in future when ArmA2 comes out, but then Microsoft will have won against my chosen Win2000 OS and have rendered me obsolete (again). So you, then, will be happy, and I will not be. But I will know who to blame for killing my reliable platform of choice. Just online chatting to one mate now, and he said to me that the -maxmem command cured his crashes under Vista. Now he runs fine and is happy with it running, other advice is to play with the graphic card settings (in the card driver's config screen) to find a stable setting combination. clay-pigeon 0 Posted October 14, 2007 Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna try it. Btw, I'm not happy with this "vista situation". Like you said, I'm somewhat "forced" to use it since only vista supports dx10. And once I paid hundreds of euros for my 8800gtx I want to enjoy it's benefits.
