Downing a hind.

Recommended Posts

I am playing the campaign in OPF.

I am in the level where James gandolfini or whatever his name is is out with his 2 other special forces buddies are out to destroy the 3 shilkas way down on the complete south, in Soviet territory at night.

This is a little after the mission where you had to "locate" the 3 shilkas.

I attack this mission like a complete nut. (I normally don't use this tactic) In this mission we kill everything we see. If we see a patrol of like a dozen men walking like a few hundred yards away, we all just go prone and killem all before they can even get off a shot.

If I see a BMP, I pull out a rocket launcher (I usually pick this off a dead enemy) and blow it away. Me and my AI men are sure shots and usually if we attack a large group of enemies we find up killing them all before they even realize where we are.

Anyways. We wind up storming one of the closest bases that has a shilka. First this I do is destroy the shilka and then we all go weapons free, most enemies are dead now and we storm the base and hop into one of the T-72's or something like that. There are 3 of us total, so it's a perfect fit. We ride around destroy the other empty or active enemy tanks and kill any remaining soldiers.

The one thing I cannot do in this mission is take down the enemy hind flying about. I order my gunner to take it down with the machine gun, but it doesn't seem to do much good (Also the machine gun on the tank we were in didn't sound too powerful) and eventually the hind blew us away.

Is there a way to take out the hind from the ground? Perhaps if I gunned? Or used a rocker launcher? Anyone have any tips or ideas?

The only thing I can think of right now is if I were in another chopper.

Hinnd's are notoriously hard to kill....usually takes two hits with a LAW or RPG, or one with a Carl Gustav...

Machine guns are virtually useless, as are Stingers...

My advice is go berserk at it with a LAW (you can't order AI to do this unfortunately), or HIDE!!! wink.gif

What about if we jumped into the shilka instead?

They say that shilkas have good anti-air capabilities.

Maybe that would be better?

Also, what other weapons does a shilka have other than that big machine gun?

Do they have any cannons like SABOT's or HEAT?

Do they have any anti-tank capabilities like that?

How many crew does one take?

The shilka only has a machine gun??

Ok, then tell me this. Can it's machine guns take out a

T-72?

I think I am going to have to play that mission again. And when I attack that base, take out the shilka crew first before they hop into the shilka and then take out any nearby T-72s that have men in them with my rocket launcher while my men cut down any gaurds running around.

Then hop into the shilka to eliminate the hind. And then hopefully a good T-72 will be around that we can hop into and take out any remaining soldiers and tanks.

Which is better to take out other tanks, the shilka or another T-72?

Are you sure??? I think I may have tried that ONCE. In that mission, it missed so I figured it was not able to do that.

Anyways, I just finished up another round of playing that level. Managed to get my men and I into a shilka in another base.

We got in, killed a bunch on gaurds before we hopped in though.

The hind showed up, I targeted it, told my gunner to knock it out the sky. The instant he but the gun to bear on the hind, the hind luckily (for it I suppose) flew behind a hill and kinda didn't really come out. (Man, I was really looking forward to blowing away that hind) I guess it was going to make another pass as soon as it came back around.

So now I told the driver to move over just a bit, when I saw an AT soldier a bit away. I tried to make the gunner target the soldier but he didn't, and I don't know why (Maybe I missed). In a few seconds we were toasted by an AT rocket.

So what's up with that? Shilka gunners can't target infantry? That's funny, I seem to remember an earlier mission where a shilka targeted and killed me while I was hiding behind a bush.

Only ....!

We're talking about 4 x 23mm water cooled machine cannons, capable of firing up to 1000 rounds a minute ... each!

It's insanely deadly for lowflying aircraft - including the Hind.

Just make sure you hit before the Hind gets into range with it's AT6.

yes.

It can't LOCK on groundtargets, but the gun can certainly be lowered enough to fire at groundtargets.

The AI also knows how to do that - try stand in front of a Shilka and get it's attention by firing a M16 at it tounge.gif

####, I am annoyed!

I just played for the last time this night.

I got to the middle base (the one that is in the middle of the map) to jump into the shilka again. This time MUCH more organized. Had a much better idea as what I was going to do.

We are on the east end of the base. Near in front of some trees laying prone and ready, watching the enemy. I am surprised the enemy hasn't seen us. Oh well.

There are 3 shilka crew (All with AKs) members standing outside next to a fire just standing there, the were directly infront of us, west of us according to my compass. Maybe 50-100 yards in front of us. To the right of them, our north west was like this long garage tunnel where 2 soldiers were standing by (1 with an AK and the other was AT also. And to the right of that (more north), was a T-72, directly to the right of the "garage".

In between the "garage" and the shilka crew was the shilka, our target, not far from us.

To the left of the crew was a long road heading west to east. (we were facing west) And 2 soldiers (1 normal, 1 AT) walking back and forth on that road, (coming towards us and then away from us.

My 2 men and I all had AKsu's. I also had an AT rocket launcher with 2 rockets.

We waited and waited for like this whole other squad of like 10 men to leave the base and go somewhere else (they do that at like 4:20 am. ( you can tell I've attempted this mission alot which is why I am so annoyed at it.)

I have supposedly already destroyed the other 2 shilkas and wrecked a whole other base earlier.

There is still 1 hind flying around which is why I am trying to even get into the shilka in the 1st place.

As soon as all the extra men leave. Just as I am about to attack, my mouse does that buggy thing. (where the mouse starts to move in one direction all on it's own for no reason)

That happens right as I tell my men "open fire" . Fortunately they manage to kill most of the gaurds and I manage to kill the few remaining. We scramble into the shilka, and the hind is spotted. While in the tank as commander, I cannot control my mouse, it only get's controled when I am in weapon view, (which is how I managed to get any kills at all right before that)

At that point I am trying desperately to make my men kill the T72 which now see's us and starts to shoot us.

Either my mouse made it so that the T72 wasn't "designated" as a target properly, or shilkas cannot attack other tanks. I'm pretty sure I would have beat it if my mouse didn't start to fuck up. ####, I'm pissed.

Anyone know?

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. I think they should add another board here. Something like a "battle stories" section where we can discuss experiences.

One hit with a tank shell is more than enough. Pretty easy to hit it while passing you when you are a gunner. Usually when you are a commader the gunner doesn't aim for air born targets sad.gif

As I metioned, you cannot lock onto ground targets with the Shilka. It's radar is purely air-scanning. You'll need to use the command menu to designate the target to your gunner (just press 2 and the targetmenu appears) - or better, get in the gun yourself tounge.gif

BTW, this mission is much easier to complete if you stay stealthy and don't engage other targets but the three Shilkas.

But that's up to you ofcourse! biggrin.gif

Well. Put satchel under the shilka near the road first and then continue to the base. Kill everybody in there. Put satchel under the shilka, enbark T72, detonate bombs, destroy the Hind and the BMP with sabot and then continue to the last base. Destroy the last Shilka and kill all soldiers in the base. Diesembark and continue on foot to the woods.
