How does multiplayer internet connection work?

Recommended Posts

I'm very interested in buying ArmA, however, I'm on a really high-ping internet (satelite-- live out of town about 10 miles, it's the only thing available), and I'm curious as to how the game works in multiplayer.

Does everything go through the server first Like in COD or MOHAA? When I have 700+ ms ping I'll click the fire button and wait over a second before the game will fire the weapon, and if I try to move I'll go forward, warp back, go forward, warp back etc... until I stay still for several seconds and it'll put me where I should be.. Essentially unplayable.

OR, is it different? Like WWIIOL (not sure if anyone's played that), where my computer tells the server where I am and what I'm doing. Like when I click the fire button, on my screen it'll shoot instantly, and if I hit whoever I was shooting at they'll die 700ms later, then 700ms after that I'll see them fall down dead.

Basically, is it possible to play on high-ping internet?

thanks

Basically you would be sending data and receiving data from the server.  Try the free multiplayer demo and you will get a pretty good idea of how it would be for the retail version of the game provided that there is any decent demo servers still up in whatever region of the world you live in.  If I were you I think it would be fair to say that you can expect some lag.  You should be able to play on some servers (again depending on where you live), but you might be restricted to coop gaming.

Basiclly that yes. You will be unware until you see units running/driving on the spot, and people you shoot appear brain dead.

The game trusts your own computer a lot more than other games. When you shoot you'll see yourself shooting instantly, and if you hit an enemy on your screen, the hit will register even if in reality the guy has run off, but you didn't see that due to lag.

You'll probably see a lot of warping though, making enemies pretty difficult to kill even with hit registering being handled locally.

Ok, that's good news smile_o.gif

With other games like this it's usually OK for medium to long range. The latency is less noticeable. Some warping, but at those ranges hiting moving targets is tough anyways.

Close ranges are almost always frustrating. (simul-kills and running behind corners and dieing afterwards because of the latency)

I try to play sniper whenever I can, or atleast some form of rifle.

I'll see if I can get the demo on my computer. I have to get it downloaded and on some sort of disk or something on another computer because satelite internet practically shuts down after 150-200mb.

Thanks for the help, guys. wink_o.gif

In arma its kind of the opposite, long range gets less priority so long range targets warp more than close ones.

I dunno man... Have you considered turn-based strategy games? biggrin_o.gif

For downloading problems, I suggest using a download manager so you can continue from where it cut off, such as Free Download Manager which is a good program despite the silly/suspicious name.

Quote[/b] ]Many of our visitors are put off by the fact that the famous community-powered protection service SiteAdvisor has marked our site as the one containing adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/freedownloadmanager.org. The reason for such a misunderstanding lies in the following: besides FDM proper, our site also has a software library featuring over 36 000 programs available for download. We do not host the programs; we just provide their description and references to the developers’ pages in our software library. Unfortunately, creating a library with such a wide range of software available for free download, we could not check if each out of the more than 36 000 programs was adware-/ spyware-free. Unluckily, according to SiteAdvisor, approximately 160 programs from the list turned out to contain adware or spyware components. We got rid of them quite rapidly and now we are trying to keep the library absolutely free from malicious downloads. We are very sorry that SiteAdvisor has not updated the information about our site yet and states that it still has ‘red downloads’. However, neither SiteAdvisor robots nor its users have ever pointed out that FDM proper is in any way dangerous.

I would try and find the least distance between you and a server and maybe always play there. You should check your upload/download and ping at www.speedtest.net let us know your connections.

Many pings are different in arma because people have servers all over the world but since your on satalite it could be different since the distances it travels no matter how close a server is.

Might want to check out the new wireless internet that is growing by the day. Wifi and others that use cell phone towers.
