Armored Fist: Crew will not fire main gun

I searched for this and found lots of advice on completing the mission, but my problem is the crew will not fire the main gun! I even re-did the tank training mission just to see if I was doing everything right. Is it becasue they do not select human targets -- this one is driving me nuts!

press space + f to tell the gunner to switch to the main gun.
