Hoot1988 0 Posted July 8, 2007 hey i was just wondering if my internet service provider gives me a monthly download limit would games that i play online, such as arma be included in the download toll?
Messiah 2 Posted July 8, 2007 i'm not sure to be honest - its based on your traffic, so I assume so, yes. thing is, BT apparently caps my downloads at 20gigs a month - I work from home off my PC, and spend a vast amount of time uploading and downloading files, as well as playing MP in my frequent coffee breaks... I've never had my ISP cut me off for over using my limit... i think its a load of fooey - means the uneducated amongst us fork out an extra 20 quid a month for that little bit more download limit
Hoot1988 0 Posted July 8, 2007 hmm interesting point, at the moment i don't have a download limit, however between 6pm and 12am there is a fair usage policy that will slow my connection down should i hit a 20gig a night limit. basically i cant be downloading shit loads of movies, porn, music, porn and games between those hours, i have however been playing armed assault between these hours and my connection never goes into red when i check it. im asking as i am going to my mums for summer and she has one that has a limit think shes with sky broadband, and i don't want to abuse her network and cause them to fin her more, im not sure though how the ISPs decide what is a download, i don't think they count your traffic when your online as information goes back and forth but i bet they'd count it when u download patches and stuff, i just don't know if the information that gets sent when in MP is a download or seen as standard traffic
Messiah 2 Posted July 8, 2007 I have a friend who's on sky broadband - he's had real problems with it during peak periods, given that sky lease their bandwidth off BT (I think - they deffinately don't own their own broadband lines) basically once the rest of the UK log on, your connection gets a hit (like most broadband packages it seems) and he then has problems playing online (from about 7pm onwards)
echo1 0 Posted July 8, 2007 Not sure how it is over in Britain, but over here its generally known that most companies dont care if you go over your limit. My current ISP doesnt have any limit, which I exploit with regular bittorrent usage
RedNova 0 Posted July 8, 2007 Why are you asking us? Why not call your ISP and ask them? After all you're paying THEM for your net.
Messiah 2 Posted July 8, 2007 have you ever rung a british call center? for one you're more likely to end up talking to some bloke in Islamabad who's being paid 1/10th of the salary of the equivalent british call center worker secondly they don't know diddly - once you exhaust their computer full of FAQ questions which they sit and stare at, they try and blow you off on the phone (sounds better than it really is, honest) - typically they will have one 'supervisor' who knows something, looking after 50 people who haven't the foggiest and can't wait for 5pm to clock off for another day of wasting peoples time. yes, i'm bitter Joking aside, its probably worth a few hours of your time listening to monotone greensleeves down the phone to ask them - I guess you never know, you may ask them something they know
Hoot1988 0 Posted July 8, 2007 take a chill pill man, or some MDMA. hes right UK call centres are usless, they'd probably say yes, then i ring again and id get another answer. i figured id be best asking the people who play who have experience of it. dm 9 Posted July 8, 2007 Any bandwidth you use is included in the monthly limit for ISP's (at least I've never heard of one that doesnt). After all, even if you're "only" gaming, its still sending traffic back and fourth down the line. Someday there wont be any download caps, pings will be good and service quality will remain the same no matter what the time of day... Someday....
zaphod 0 Posted July 8, 2007 online gaming produces traffic ... limited traffic means limited gaming. thats it.
