Touch-Buddy touch screen GUI for ArmA

Recommended Posts

Just searched to see if anyone ever posted about this free aka donationware because it's very useful and adds a lot to any sim. There is a really well made profile for ArmA at the touch-buddy site. www.touch-buddy.com The program was originally made for sim pits for flying in Lockon and Falcon 4AA but there is also a toolkit for making profiles with your own artwork and layouts. I bought a keytec touch screen overlay to put on an old laptop I had so I run it in a client/server mode with my game rig. This is the best way to use it but you can also just run it off a 2nd display and use a regular mouse to try it out. The ArmA profile puts all your squad, flying, armor etc, every key command at your fingertips as a mapped button or switch instead of just a letter on a keyboard that you have to remember. There is a great demo video there to check out. This is the coolest thing I have found to add to my sim gaming rig since trackir. Worth a good look and try.

Excellent. That would something for Game 2 to integrate it into ArmA. Currently ArmA supports triple head. Why not enable a mode where 2 out of 3 monitors could become touch screens in a fighter jet or free configurable keys? Currently steering suffers from to slow access to functions - one reason why MFDs are in jets/copters. In a battle you cant deal with pull down menu or strange key combinations to select ammo/weapon.

This touch-buddy seems to be already a huge step.

I unfortunately can't test this out atm but I think it would be a fantastic addition to ArmA, up there with and a good partner to TrackIR. There is already a profile available for ArmA (not one I would call perfect but a good indication).

TB Profiles

5th link down on this page is the profile for ArmA with about a dozen screenshots. I will be looking into getting a 7-10" TS for use with this.

This link has a youtube video of TB in use in LOMAC.

Because touchscreen overlays at a decent size come at a price that is hardly affordable for average gaming joe. (17´´ monitor overlay around 200 $, 19´´ to 20´´ size at 299 $ )

Apart from that it doesn´t have to be integrated, you can get all the stuff going with the little proggy alone, while triple view has to be integrated by producers to make it work , touchscreen functions can be added by everyone as you simply hotmap keys to touchscreen input.

Be aware that if you are running TouchBuddy in local mode (i.e with the screen attached to the same PC that you are running your game on), then when you press the touchscreen and moves the mouse to that area and clicks, then the game can (and usually does) pick up those mouse moves and clicks.

In ArmA, with TB running in local mode, when you press the touchscreen, your player will turn and fire, because it has seen a mouse move and a mouse click. Absolutley nothing I can do to bypass this sad_o.gif

I run all my games with TouchBuddy in client/server mode, with an instance of TB running on my game machine in server mode, and another instance on another machine (with the screen attached to that) in client mode. The client sends the key macros commands across the network, but it means that the game PC never sees thiese mouse moves and mouse clicks.

I know this is slightly off topic, but it has to be said:

oh...

MY...

God... notworthy.gif

Zorlac, this is INCREDIBLE (works great for pretty much all the games I play). Now all I need to do is get a couple of 6x6 or 6x8 touchscreens, and we're good to go biggrin_o.gif
