Oh, Wobble! in the standardised scale only gold medals count. So Norway leads, even if Germany or US would have 13223 silver-medals, noone would give a shit. So you try to cheat us with your scale?

NORWAY STAYS POINT LEADER! biggrin.gif

I think you are wrong. That summary is about which nations have the most medals - not points. Norway is still leading the points!

I'm afraid not. Turn out the lights and hide in the basement. There are two hockey teams from north america with no teeth and grim faces on the way to your house!

Funny thing is that they are carrying baseball bats - not hockey sticks?confused.gif

it is not my scale, it is the scoring method on the offical 2002 olympics site.. if all theat counts are gold medals then why do they have silver and bronze? thats stupid.

so what yer saying of country a wins 1 gold medal and does awful in every single other event, and country B wins 50 silver medals, and 35 bronz medals but no gold.. the country A is better than country B??

afraid not...

Norway, Usa and Germany have all 71 points. Norway is on top because gold medals count more than silver and bronze. smile.gif

I am sorry wobble but in the statistics I know it works that way. GOLD is what counts. So country A with one Gold Medal is ranked higher than country B with 10 silver medal.

as far as I know, there are 2 different forms of scoring:

the point system, which is most commin which goes by medal count.

and the medal value system, in which a gold is worht 3, a silver 2 and bronze 1

under the first US currently has 10 AUT has 9 and norway 8.

under the second the US has 21 and Norway has 18 germany and AUT has 13 Germany has 20...

however ive never heard of any scoring system that goes ONLY by gold medals, and silver and bronz means absolutley nothing.. and quite frankly such a scoring method sounds quite stupid to me

Oh, and by the way! Even though I started this thread I'm only mildly patriotic. May the best man(/woman) win!

It's nice to see that this thread hasn't turned into the usual country bashing thing! smile.gif

explain this scoring system to me... not the dumb one where only gold medals count and silver or bronze means nothing.. but the one where USA and Germany..etc have 71 points..

how do you get 71? what are the values that = this

im just curious, not trying to bash or anything.

Fuck country bashing! But the topic is interesting enough!

Wobble if you go the the CNN teletext you see the olympic medal statistic as I know it (it is around page 520).

Oh (I need my appreciation now), did you know that IOC is situated in Lausanne, right in the city where I got my appartment. (of course those rich bastards are located down at the lake, where it costs billions and billions to buy a metre of land)

good night, gotta watch sports

im having trouble with this "gold only counts" scoring system..

the basis of it makes absoltley NO sense any way... its just dumb..  take an example

you take 5 tests.. on 1 tests you make a 100 and on the rest you make a 0...

so.. should your grade be a 100?... no it should be an average of all 5..

just look at this scoring system in action

country A places first.. in one event of 50.. but it places dead last in the 49 other events

country B places second in 40 of the events and third in the other 10..

based on your scoring system country A is better than B despite the fact that in only placed in one event of the 50 and placed last in the rest... and B place in the top 3 in every single event..

I dont know who uses this system, but I do know that in no way does it make ANY sense.

If I could explain I would. Only problem is that there is no explanation of the score system to be found anywhere. I found the points summary in a norwegian paper (link below), but I also noticed that the results differ on the official page:

Official page:

http://www.olympics.com/x/f/frame.htm?u=/news/slocmain_front.asp

and:

http://www.olympics.com/x/f/frame.htm?u=/news/slocmain_front.asp

Norwegian paper:

http://www.vg.no/sport/ol/2002/medaljer.hbs

I think the official page only refers to the total amount of medals - not the points. Of course, I wouldn't bet on this!

ahh, I see.. so this is the Norwegian olympic scoring system.. not an international one..

actually.. IS there an international scoring systeM? or does (or can) every nation have their own method?... that would be interesting.

of those 3 links only the norway newspaper ranks Norway (its own country) obove the US.. the rest list the US at the top

and I still fail to see how 5 gold 3 silver and o bronze equals 71 just like 3 gold 5 silver and 2 bronz does... what are the numerical values of each medal? gold=X silver=x bronze=x

I guess everyone has their own scoring system.. so aside from who places 1st 2nd or their in a given event.. its up to speculation as to which country did the best overall..

I knida like this method.. that way more than one country can be a winner

So, explain this then: How can Austria be ranked higher than Germany (Germ: 3 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze - Aut: 1 gold, 1 silver, 7 bronze).

Hehe, You are only allowed to post 10 alternatives. None of the UK countries are essential in the winter games even though one can stress the fact that Eddie "the eagle" certainly did provide lots of entertainment some years ago. If I could I would put Wales in that poll (yes, I know you are half welsh) just because I have a welsh terrier - and he beats'em all!

Go Wales!

i never said it was.. they have the same amount of medals but germany has more points...  20, AUT has 13  I.E. gold=3 silver 2 and bronze 1.. (if you use that system)..

I see n way AUT could be ranker higher than germany.

According to the official site it is (Aut ranked higher than Germany).

.....oh, what the hell, time will tell. (I should have been a poet)!
