Editors Database /New to Armed Assualt Editing

Recommended Posts

Hi there

The question i would like to raise with the forum is why is the Newbie Sections are never updated!! (Editors Database /New to Armed Assualt Editing), i have asked a few questions here in the forum and either i am ignored or i am told to search the forum or the wiki (which is generally the first thing i do)

But yet when we go to the these sections of the forum they are never updated or they refer to OFP commands which are often misleading

I am sure that i am not the only newbie that feels the same way

Please do not misinterpret this post as i am not having a go at anybody in particular.

I understand your frustration.

I have my own theory about this. It is based only on observation but I think we are in a period very similar to what happened to OFP about the time of the GOTY edition. In the beginning of OFP, not many people knew very much and there was a long period of learning where the community first formed. About the time OFP began to burn people out, a small group of people showed up who purchased either the GOTY edition or original OFP in discount bins.

They walked basically into the void left by all those that had knowledge (when they left/took hiatus). A good portion of people remained, but not many. We had experienced problems with our main editing site OFPEC and it had to recreate alot of our knowledge base. So... to sum things up... there were few people and sites left to pass on their knowledge. Those that were new and were able to be brought up to speed helped develop the wiki and other sites. The rest were like you.

Now, with ArmA, alot of people have come back. The problem is, the rules have all changed. Things that worked (or didn't work) in OFP are completely new to even the veterans.

So, while some of us stand in shock, some of us are scrambling to re-learn everything, and some of us are in denial, you are going to unfortunately going to have to be patient while we rebuild ourselves.

The good news is that some things will work... some things will not... personally I think those threads were useful for about the first month and now everyone has found better ways to distribute their knowledge. Forums are good for questions but generally bad for storage of knowledge, hence the wiki. Reading others' scripts/missions is about the best learning experience possible and the good news is that OFPEC is alive again.

I do know for a fact that there are alot of things being worked on the help new guys. BAS has developed the BAS-f framework for helping start new missions as one example. Some applications are also in development to make scripting easier.

I've been working on an Wiki article explaining what all the pretty menus etc in the mission editor do. It's only ~75% complete, which is why I haven't added it to the sticky topics. I can't claim to be any kind of guru, so it's been an interesting learning experience for me too smile_o.gif

I will attempt to create some more articles about how to create desired effects, how to script, mission editing FAQ, etc, hopefully all before I start my new job!

If i could contribute to that...

I can research some things of ArmA and i want to do it.

If you want, just tell me what kind of things you wanting to research, and i'll do my best.

I can't publish on Wiki, because my English is so horrible, and when trying to explain technical issues, even getting worse.

So, just count with me to make some hard work researchs.

I'm just a rookie in scripts, and just with ArmA game from only january of 2007.

But still i think that i can help, because:

1st. I want.

2nd. I prefer research (or make experiments) than play or script missions. Well, scripts for me is so interesting as well. What you know what i mean.

So, one eye from me, 2 hands and half a brain.
