About BMP-2 (and other russian tanks)

Recommended Posts

There are few things wrong with BMP-(2) in the game

1. Commander is located wrongly - Should be in turret, just like in heavier tanks.

2. In 2A42 (30mm gun) are 3 different ROF:s - Single shot, Slow auto (30-60 rnds/min) and Fast auto (1200 rnds/min!!!!theoretically)

These things I (as an Ex-gunner of BMP-2) founded, so if possible, You could try to fix those in a patch, or something.

And as general about (russian) tanks:

- ALL russian made tanks have AAMG's, mounted in commander's cupola in T-72 and T-80 tanks and in T-55 loader's cupola. One minus on this is that if you wish to fire AAMG, you have to be turned out (in game terms)!!

-Smoke dischargers are found in all MBT's (Excluding ancient T-55), BMP-2 and M2 Bradley have smoke dischargers.

Game itself is AMAZING!!! FANTASTIC work!!!

AFAIK, the OFP game engine doesn't allow for more than one gunner on each vehicle.

Welcome to the forum.

Gaswell is correct, only one turreted firing position per tank :/ Though it's possible to add the M2 HMG to the top of the vehicle through scripting.

btw, are the ammo explosions correct? And did you have much of a choice of ammo APDS, APFSDS, HE etc? I would like to see those modelled in OFP.

Well allmost all other explosions on OFP are more or less correct, expect LAW (and RPG?). They don't have explosive effect at all. All they do is raise dust, if shot is missed from target. If they hit an armor, they'll penetrate it, and blast molten metal through armor, and cause very unpleasant shrapnel effect inside tank.

In OFP the ammo selection of BMP-2 is accurate (only HE and AP), allthough it has just been invented HEAP ammo for it, if I remeber correctly. In MBT:s not. For example in T-72 there are HE, HEAT and APDS.

The LAW in OFP seems more like a Carl Gustav, using anti-personell munitions. It's even reloadable, just like a real CG. IM(very)HO, it should perhaps be changed to use a different explosion effect; maybe more like the BMP-2 AP round. That'll stop the LAW from being "abused" as an anti-personell weapon, especially online. The current frag effect might be fun, and it might provide good gameplay (I don't think so myself), but if you're gonna kill infantry you really oughta use a different tool. Also, it hampers the AI somewhat, since it won't "abuse" this effect.

Just my two euro cents.

Corp.Pihla- It is nice to meet someone in the forums who has actually driven or commanded Russian vehicles in real life. I am always a big fan of Russian army vehicles ESPECIALLY the Mi 24 Hind which I am a big lover of it. So how is you experience in the BMP-2? How is the vehicle like? Fast? Reliable? Comfortable? Have you went into combat with it? Please share your experience with our fellow OF brothers if you are free! Thank you SIRE!

One other effect in the game that bothers me is the fact that SABOT rounds can "explode".

I can take a Sabot round and fire it at the ground and kill 5+ soldiers at once. IRL, all a SABOT round would do is just drive itself into the groud, because all it is is a metal rod. It should not leave a big crater in the ground.

The same can go for HEAT rounds. Most of the explosive power is channeled forward on a HEAT round so that it can penetrate armour. It should not leave a big crater behind either.

I think that there should be canister rounds available for taking out infantry. Either add that or add more rounds to the coaxial MG on the tank, there should be more than just 500.

Yupp, i complained about the KE projectile issue since 1.10, they even seem to explode with a fireball when hitting soft targets such as infantry in OFP, not to speak of the ground...it´s not that i target infantry with AP 120mm regulary when the coax is available, but nevertheless it´s wrong.

Another thing i would like to see changed are the explosions, they don´t seem right to me, to slow, too spread and not violant enough, by that i don´t mean they should become bigger....actually much smaller , but more concentrated and sudden. When a tank for example is hit by a HEAT or APFSDS round, there is a "Trefferblitz" as we call it in germany, the hit of the round on armor causes a violent and very bright flash concentrated around the area of impact, that lasts only a few ms. In OFP however it looks more like a teared apart napalm explosion.

I have a nice video of some Warriors and Challenger IIs doing an shooting exercise, i´ll try to compress and post it here.

Ok, my experience in BMP-2:

Fast - Maybe, depends in what shape have the workers been as they builded it... (In mondays... mad.gif )

Reliable - See above, usually, yes. (Starts easially at -30 C)

Well the gun is excelent work, we had only one problem, and that was due to ammo belt joint flown into gears of belt lifter.

Comfortable - LIKE H*LL

Seen combat - No, luckily. (With simulators, yes)
