Mister Frag 0 Posted December 29, 2001 128MB of RAM isn't enough, especially with XP. The bare minimum for running OFP in a satisfactory manner is 256MB with Windows 98/ME, and 384MB with Windows 2000/XP.
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Ok i'm off to purchase new ram after the first of the year,I will add 256 to the other 128 does this sound good guys???wating to fragg happy! Shocker_rob
Mister Frag 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Alas, systems with RDRAM won't take "odd" memory configurations, you'll have to add memory modules in pairs. You'll have to go to either 256MB or 512MB.
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Cant I add two 128 sticks???,right now I guess I have two 64 in place, will this work?? The brains @ office max it's no prob but you say it ant so??Give me the skinny pleeezzz. shocker_rob
Gamer 10 Posted December 30, 2001 yes that will be an improvement (256mb) and they both will work...... but honestly 256mb is like the bare minimum nowadays.....
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Ok I'm off again to buy mo - soo keep the replies coming for your 2 cents worth! p.s. I just wanna play without the laggggggggg! Shocker_rob
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Sorry I just posted but read the last reply and he said 256 (right)? If I add correctly 64x2 =128 + two 128 stix =384???is this right?
Mister Frag 0 Posted December 30, 2001 You can mix different RIMM RDRAM modules, but they must be added in pairs, so you can add either two 64MB modules, two 128MB modules, or two 256MB modules. Here is some info on upgrading Rambus-based Pentium 4 systems, you may want to read it: http://www.upgradingandrepairingpcs.com/articles/upgrade2_01_02.asp
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 I'm not doubting your knowldge fragg but will the config I requested work?? I.e. =(two 64 stix -factory set- and two 128 stix I intend to purchase?) any other replies welcome. Shocker_rob
Mister Frag 0 Posted December 30, 2001 Yes, it should work. I just wanted to make sure you weren't getting a single 256MB RIMM instead of two 128MB modules.
shockerob 0 Posted December 30, 2001 kool, thats what I need to know. later boys see you dead on multiplayer. Better late than never! Shocker_rob
Deus Ex 0 Posted January 1, 2002 Theres nothing wrong with your hardware, I had Windows XP Home Edition, I played OFP, and all I got was LAGG LAGG LAGG. I have 1.5Ghz P4, with 20GB HD, DSL, and 256mb of RDRAM. That should be sufficiant to run XP and my games. But since XP is pretty much crash resistant, its busy running 17 programs at a time to keep your computer running safe. After I saw Win XP Home Edition, could not run on my screaming computer, I went back to Windows ME. Tada! No more problems. I was very dissapointed in XP, Made me feel like a newbie to computers again... When I accualy am very computer literate. I hope this helps. Deus Ex
Mister Frag 0 Posted January 2, 2002 You had lag because your system didn't have enough memory to keep from swapping all the time. If you had spent a little extra money and gotten more RAM, you would have found that Windows XP is an excellent gaming platform, especially for multiplayer games, because the network code in XP is far more robust than in 98/ME. Deus Ex <span id='postcolor'> Sorry dude but if your pc with those specs lagged it gotta be something with your setup that does it. A pc with those specs should not lag with XP. XP would take about 100mb of your memory for itself (plus/minus a few mb). I know plenty of people running slower machines, p3-500/256mb upto p4-2ghz etc, those people the game keeps lagging for have either not enough memory (less than 256), have done some weird stuff with their XP/Win2k or just have bad luck with a driver combination that lags down the pc. (like running 4x fsaa at 1600x1200 on a card that can't do it

Mister Frag 0 Posted January 3, 2002 Just resign yourself to the fact that 128MB is not enough, even with ME. If you still have XP, go into the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del, then select Task Manager), and look at how much memory different processes are taking. Immediately after starting OFP, it consumes 54MB on my system, plus 1MB for the SafeDisc copy-protection stub. At the beginning of the 'Steal the Car' SP mission, it takes 108MB. In MP games, things are even worse. Add to that the memory requirements of the OS, and 128MB is not enough. Also, if you open the Performance tab in Task Manager, you'll be able to see how much of the physical memory in your system is in use, and how much had to be swapped to the page file.
