Jmaster33 0 Posted December 3, 2006 I've noticed that a number of times during missions and in the campaign, I'm giving orders to AI and they are just not carrying them out. For example, I am on the mission in the campaign where you have to take those two jeeps and clear out three enemy camps, and I'm telling the AI to get in formation, or to move to a certain place and they are just staying still and not doing anything. The icon says "Moving.." but they are just standing there. They won't obey any of my orders. It's very odd. It's also extremely frustrating because that mission is extremely difficult when you don't have all the resources you are supposed to have at your disposal. The position of the camps provides little to no cover, so without the jeeps and with the AI not properly carrying out your orders, the mission is extremely difficult. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this?
Mr_Tea 0 Posted December 3, 2006 Yes, and not only when the AI is driving. Sometimes, AI soldiers do not move after they have gone prone. I ordered 3 go xx, 3 said roger and in the team menu i could see, 3 moving. But 3 didn`t moved,3 was still laying down and watched the surrounding as no orders where given. Jmaster33 0 Posted December 3, 2006 Yeah, kinda seems like quite a big issue considering giving orders to your soldiers is a major part of the game.
evilnate 0 Posted December 3, 2006 FYI - Be careful not to give out spoilers! I played that same mission last night and I didn't have any of those problems with the AI - In fact, they did exaclty what I wanted. The only problem I noticed with the AI was the driving. I was driving the lead car and the other humvee has a hard time catching up/keeping formation because i'm heavy on the gas. The AI drive slower than Placebo's grandma! Zander 0 Posted December 3, 2006 any part of the engine can be modified with a patch ? any chance to see a patch in some months improving ai and physics ?

simulacra 0 Posted December 4, 2006 One thing I'm wondering about is if the AI can be scripted to rather take cover behind walls and corners rather than lying out in the street. We were told that we'd get AI-tools this time around, anyone have any tally on those tools?

It already happened a lot to me in OFP. Ususally the AI unable to find a way out of the garden it is stuck into, ie pathfinding to be corrected. It looks like it's the same in ArmA. Now, perhaps is it even worse, if no garden is involved Is your AI stuck there doing nothing without anything blocking it's way to the point you want himto go? alx 20 Posted December 4, 2006 I'm sure I read a message from Placebo somewhere that stated the AI is affected by system load. That seems logical. If your CPU is struggling under the load of everything else that makes the game, the AI calculations will suffer as well. Try lowering settings and trying the same missions to see if there is any noticable improvement in the AI.

Scripted AI is the last thing we want in Armed Assault. If the AI is scripted, it is no longer an AI. Than whe would have script controlled non player characters. simulacra 0 Posted December 4, 2006 ALL AI is scripted to some extent, you could have ALOT of scripts telling the AI what to do in certain situations, but thinking that you can get believeable ai by saying "that is a bush, it is good for hiding" and "if you lie down the enemy cant hit you that easy" is just wrong, especially when if you call it "dynamic". A dynamic AI would NEVER lie down on a open street, or even be in an open anything unless having no choice. A true dynamic AI would recognize cover by a number of properties. not just have set items which are labeled 'cover' in the code. It would do it on the fly while doing other things, it would be able to accurately spot and asses the threat aswell as react fast while under fire. In other words, a true dynamic AI would kill your computer. So yes, if "scripted" AI makes for a more believeable opponent and more realistic behaviour, I'm all for it, the end results are all that matters...
Maddmatt 1 Posted December 4, 2006 ArmA AI is controlled by FSM files which are fully modable, there is no need to use scripts for the AI.
Mr_Tea 0 Posted December 4, 2006 The problem is, that the sripts works very well in the situation and place they are made for. But too fast whe would run into problems.
