The Jub-Jub Bird 1 Posted January 27, 2002 Quote from Zyros 'The SAW was developed through an initially Army-led research and development effort and eventually a Joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to restore sustained and accurate automatic weapons fire to the fire team and squad. -={When actually fielded in the mid-1980s, the SAW was issued as a one-for-one replacement for the designated "automatic rifle"}=-' This is perfectly correct Zyros, but it never actually enterd production in the US as the M249 until 1992. The Belgium Minimi was eventually approved to the role of SAW in 1982 and from that date on it very slowly seaped into use with the US armed forces. But because of a very long period of testing and modification it wasn't until 1992 that it could actually be manufactured within the states. The changes were largely to suit US manufacturing methods and were relatively small, though nonetheless important. When the Gulf Live-Firing exercise commenced the US Army had to rather rapidly purchase over 1000 Minimis because simply not enough M249s had been made. The only difference between the M249 and the Minimi is the presence of a heat shield above the barrel on the M249, all other characteristics are identical. If you want an M249 in the game to fit within the time line then ask for a Minimi, but if you wait for the data disc this spring you are bound to find a M249 SAW on it. Jubs<span id='postcolor'> A very Interesting Point. But a little technical point that you bring.==-Whether, it wasnt physically manufactured on US soil probably means that it wasnt 'Mainstream" as far as servcice, But It was actually used in that Timeline, and that is what I'm concerened in regards to being chronologicaly correct withe the time frame with Operation Flashpoint. I am anxiously awaiting the data disc like yourself Thanks .

The minimi, i wouldnt mind BUt thats what my post was about. The reason that it was built in the 1980 to me justifies it to be involved in the game one way or another. Regardless it is was actually runner up or not. It existed Thats more that I can say for a few addons weapons in OFP, not that Im complaining just comparing. I dont think anyone is picking on the game, I think that this categories "add ons" is exactly for comments, suggestion and request even though they will probably fall on deaf ears.
