pistol654 0 Posted January 19, 2002 Hey, I just got a new Radeon 8500 in my computer and I seem to be having some performance problems now. I downloaded Fraps and tested my FPS, and I seem to flow between 10 and 70 FPS, I get 70 at 1600x1200 but it dips down to 10 sometimes. On lower resolutions however, I can't get above 30 FPS and I still get dips down to 10. My old card was a Radeon VE 64 meg, which came with my Gateway and was not optimised for gaming, but with that card I never really experienced slowdowns when I used that card, which I ran at 800x600. I don't understand why I am having this problem, considering this card is supposed to be so capable. Could it just be a driver issue? I've tried both the 4.13.7191 driver, which is supported by Microsoft as well as the 4.13.4202 driver, which is not yet supported by Microsoft, and the problems remain identical. I've heard some people aren't having any problems with this card on this game, yet I am. Here's my specs: 1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon 256 Megs RAM (not DDR) ATI Radeon 8500 64 updated drivers Microstar MS-6389 motherboard? Should I try updating anything else? Something I've heard people do to help performance is to update their BIOS. Should I do that, or would that not help? If I should, how would I do it? Thanks. Wreck-It 0 Posted January 20, 2002 This might not help at all, but it might also save your gaming. There's a section on Nvidia optimisation on my website that is quite comprehensive on settings. The Radeon and Nvidia boards architecture is pretty similar, they have different names for similar functions, so try going to my website, and find settings for your board and try to give it settings similar to the ones applied to Nvidia boards. Some guys have E-mailed me some good feedback about that... Since i'm running a TNT here, i don't know the exact settings required to get the best out of radeons, but apparently, disabling Vsync is a major boost. Just click the image in my sig. Hope this helps.
pistol654 0 Posted January 23, 2002 Thanks for trying Wreck-It, But I've tried that before. I've tried screwing around with basically everything that I can under the advanced display properties option. I'm basically at a loss as to why my performance has decreased since my I've installed the Radeon 8500. I have a feeling that it is a driver issue, but if anybody has had a good experience with the Radeon 8500 and Operation Flashpoint I would like to hear because from I've heard, there seems to be a reocurring problem with the new Radeon 8500's. I have a Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO, which seems to run OFP well with V-sync off, 8-bit stencil on and W-buffer off, in T&L mode, resolution 1024x768. I'm using the latest "official" driver from ATI. In fact, it runs best at 1600x1200, yet it's still not as smooth as my old card running at 800x600. Boy, I hope the next drivers, whenever they are released, solve this. Bassemoluff 0 Posted January 24, 2002 Are you using the most recent reference drivers for your Radeon 8500? If so, are you running OFP in 16 or 32 bit color depth? If in 16, try 32 - it might actually be faster with the newest gfx cards.

Also, I am playing in 32 bit mode cause I read somewhere that OFP was designed to be run in 32 bit mode. Strangely, this new card (Radeon 8500) is not running any smoother than my old Radeon 64 VE, which is not even a gaming card!
