Best explanation for zombie outbreak?

Hey all , I was just wondering as to what is the best cause for zombies? I never really thought about it much, but it helps make the beginning of a mission I'm thinking about.

The reasons for zombie outbreak off the top of my head.

1.Hell's full

2.chemical spill

3.nuclear test/experiment/explosion

4.viral outbreak

5.and the reason I'd like to use, upper atmospheric meteor explosion. Alien to our own solar system the meteor spreads a previously unknown radiation over the globe.

I think this was kinda the reason in the first Night of the living dead movie.

An important part of my mission idea would have tourists riding PC's tourist boats befor the event. And to show life on the island befor the catastrophe. So I need a zombie making event that kinda sneaks in.

Any other reasons for the dead to walk the earth?

spontaneous mutation brought evolution forward, actually creating a new race far advanced from humans in being inteligent, reasonable and respectfull to earth and other beings.

Zombies in fact would be the actual humans, brainless destroying and slaugthering wathever comes their way.

feeling bad for first answer (is there hope for humans?) I did some brainstorming

you know the rule: The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sence for people beliving it.

the hole Zombie stuff is nonsens, why should any illness create create a need to eat human flesh or blood??? There is nothing special at humans and if the zombies are brainless, they would stupidly follow any animal and not wait for humans.

So if you want the people to "belive" your story a simple virus/chemical scientific approach is not sufficient. Maybe adding some crazy scientist or someone super rich who want's to punish people for crimes to him and the world?

You could combine the theme with meteor and Hell. Like the devil supporting our sad super rich from the world misunderstood guy/girl to find a meteor containing concentrated "evil" which he is supposed to spread of the world via virus?

Actually after watching a show on cannibalism tonight that kinda makes sense when it comes to zombies.   In extreme starvation situations parts of the brain shuts down making us capable of doing anything to stay alive.

I wanted to write more about the reasons for my mission, but a pending thunderstorm pretty much told me to cut it short  

The reason for a gradual zombie outbreak  is so people can see life on the Nogova 2004 map.  Farmers - farming  police making their rounds.  And a general peaceful existence.

Tourists in ships taking tours (which comes back to haunt you later on if you think hiding on a remote island is an option)  

Think I'll stick to the meteor idea as I've been collecting radio broadcasts form the original NOTLD that kinda hints to this.

as I said, some random mutant virus is ok for RL but for fiction it is unlogical for humans to hunt humans and makes the story look weak

so some alien race is doing war on their planet and develops an virus to kill the brain and make people hunt their neighbours in order to spread the virus as fast as possible. (I know, which intelligent race would do biological wars on their own planet )

the virus works better than expected getting everyone. A few million years later the planet is smached to pieces by a big astroid and another few trillion years later pieces arrive at earth. (astronomical the chance are to low for a reasonable story, but average people will not recognize )

or you turn around "War of Worlds" story and let the masians send an infected stone to prepare their invasion.

Nice idea for a second part where you have to fight Zombies and Marsians

Hmm for zombies i perfer the Virus like reason.

How about:

A new form of parasite has evolved/been created by some top secrect miliatry project, it spreads by infesting peoples blood and working its way to the brain, slowly feeding on it intill it grows strong enough to take over the body (thas why the zombies have limited inteligance) then it uses the primitive part of the brain to controll the zombie and beings mutating the reproductive system to produce its own off srping, that are so small they can circulate in the blood. The teeth start to sharpen and the gums start to bleed. The skin on the tips of the victems fingers start to flake off revealing hard and spikey bone coverd in blood and such. Now the infected zombie - controled by this primitive parasite begins to hunt for other living life forms (i like to think you can also get zombie dogs and such) to sink its teeth and claw like hands into to spread its off spring into the blood stream of another victem. And so the cycle countinues.

The off spring in the blood of the victem start to fight each other for controll of the hosts body, eventually one of the parasites wins by eating its siblings and becomes too large (due to all the feeding) to stay in the blood stream and begins to settle in the brain, eating it away (like i mentioned before) to make enough room for its self and etc...

Edit: I also think it be extreamly hard for any kind of large scale, world dominating, zombie out brake. Zombies are slow and stupid, all you would need is a blatoon of tanks and a few squads of infantry to deal with it pretty effortlesly.

I like ofpforums idea because, how would anyone really know? They would be in to much of a panic to say "Hmm Lets look in space for some crazy asteroid". But as a second answer I would say the asteroid. It makes sence sinc we have barely explored space except around our planet. There are (probably is) millions of materials that we have never discovered in space and other planets, hell, theres probably more stuff in the oceans that we havent discovered yet.

All good reasons!!! In the first Night of the living dead Romero used the radiation path. And it was explained that ANYONE dieing when the radiation is present would zombify.

It seems that the reason for zombies in movies have changed over the years. I think the reason for this is peoples better understanding of science.....well that is, we know many things on earth can kill us

Zombifacation now seems only possible if your bit or hurt by a zombie or by cotangent. And that can lead to containment and the eventual end to them.

With the original zombie cause people were guaranteed to become a zombie when they die healthy or not.... UhOH granny died from a heartattack ,get the gasoline and a gun ready!

You see this in the newest movie when a man hangs himself and comes back to ......errrr...life.

Could that be figured into the original zombie mod script for OFP?

This actually happened

I was driving on the highway of nogova 2004 at night to do a test. I wasn't really paying attention, I hit an intersection when a dude on a bike was turning in. Befor I knew it I plowed over him....... He was dead and I actually had the after thought of dragging his body to a nearby bush. I left the accident and kept going. Zombie opportunity missed

Excuse me but making people "believe" in a zombie story because of the reason why!?

I say anything else then the classic reasons are blaspheme so even though Im a bigger fan of the "Fulci-voodoo-zombie" I have to say that in this "military milieu" chemical spill or nuclear test would be more correct. And please no aliens! (just kidding, do what you want)

You could go with the religious reason 'when hells full the dead will walk the earth' and all that. Althou if hells gates really did open id would of thought Mr.satan him self would pack a bigger punch then a couple of slow, dump, undead. Im talking about demons, hell fire, all that stuff. Which would be hard to do in OFP. Maybe you could use that vampire addon for the demons or somthing.
