OFP 2 Mission

Recommended Posts

I've got not much time to describe my idea now, but I don't want to forget it, maybe I'll go a little more detailed tomorrow. whistle.gif

The Idea is to create a mission with the OFP 2 feeling. An island, that feels like the real world. I OFP 2 you will be able to go anywhere and always find anyone to talk with, and there will be random events and battles.

My idea is, to create a mission with 10+ of hours game time. This will be a hughe project, and I've no clue how to create a map but I hope that I can inspire some of you guys out there.

In my vision, every city is crowded, everywhere are civilians running around. It is no war on Nogova. The first hours of the mission is to work, my idea is to work as a taxi driver or so. However, you just live like normal civilans do. The mission must be extremely detailed. Anwhere you go there will be something. If you drive down the street there would be cars, people airing theirselvs or walking through the forrest, maybe hounting etc. Just examples, I just want you to understand me smile_o.gif!

With the time, you get the first information about an attack. People are talking about it.

It's evening, you worked enough and of course want to see if everything is right. So you drive to the beach and see the invaders. When you come back, you are being assumed to an army. The battle begins. But you aren't part of a platoon, you can also create an own army, or fight alone. The freedom must be as large as possible.

Almost everthing in this mission must be random. But what is important is, that there must always be this "real feel". When a city is attacked, there must be civilans, surprised be the attack. Fleeing. Dieing. Of course there must be some scripts, but not many. The intro, some combats, some other stuff, the end etc.

In this scenario there are two possible ends. A defeat. A victory. Just like in a skirmish mode, who is totally defeated looses. To create a constant war athmosphere, there must be reinforcements every ~30 minutes, and new attacks every ~2-3 hours. Example what a player could manage with these information.

He could look at his watch and attack the reinforced units when the time has come. Or he could fight at another front.

The units who reinforce every 30 minutes meet at one position and stick together there until they are enough, -> after 2-3 hours e.g.

Additional ideas:

USA ATTACKS UDSSR (!wink_o.gif

In addition with DXDLL, LLAUMA, Y2K3 / EECP / FFUR, WGL Islands etc. etc. this becomes a bit more of the taste of OFP 2.

I won't carry this more out, I hope that you understood my vision and are as enthusiastic about it as I am. I think that I don't need to explain it anymore, I believe that you can imagine it onn your own.

Excuse my bad english wink_o.gif! Comments and questions are welcome.

i think everybody who's played ofp has dreamed of that mission; the problem is that the computers we have now can't handle that level of complexity. the only thing we can do until the hardware catches up with our ideas is to "fake" it as best as we can; for example, bn880's AIonDemand only has units created when the player is near, so that the mission-designer can simulate more units in the mission than the player's computer would be able to handle at once.

edit:

i'm not saying its impossible to create that kind of mission, i'm just saying its going to be damn hard...

Over at SOW, we had a campaign that had very similar features to your request (civ population, conversations, random events, large armies, etc..). After gathering notes, drawing up a design doc, and prototyping features. We got worn out.

It's not impossible.... it's just like asking one (or a few) people to make enough potato chips to feed an army and only giving them a knife and a ton of potatos.

Even mod teams have trouble releasing a full add-on pack with demo missions.

While your idea is noble and sounds great...you might be better off just waiting for OFP 2... or at least for Armed Assault (to get graphical enhancements and what-not).

If other people get together and make a team, sure I would help, except I only know some simple scripts and commands, but I bet I could atleast lend a hand.

EDIT: Is this going to be one big mission or a bunch of dynamic missions?

I've got several reasons why we should start creating this mission:

  1. ArmA will be compatible with it --> longliving, further updates.
  2. We should see it as a challenge, since it is difficult to create it.
  3. OFP 2 is very far away...
  4. It will be fun to play and to create.
  5. [insert more here...]

Of course nobody is able to create such a mission alone. So another Idea of me is to make it "Open Source"! smile_o.gif

We create a thread in this Forum and everybody has acces to the map in the latest version. Everybody can play around with it, can bring in his own ideas, can help us.

Maybe we can create one core team which works hand in hand with the community. The community can help us directly with mapping and indirectly with decisions, e.g. which island to choose, who fighting, jobs etc.

Anybody interested? I'm damn motivated to challenge this! smile_o.gif

As I said in my post above, Ill join if a team gets together, but it would be impossable for me to make such a mission by myself.

And yeah Im motivated!

well sounds very nice idea i would have a go at creating it but

1.if there are units all over the place every city with many scripts running at one time it will cause so much lag no one would be able to play it

2.i dont have the time

3.The amount of sound files, scripts, .jpg's and all the other things the mission will be one big download size

but good luck on anyone who tried this

1 - I dont now of the script, but I heard someone mention that philcommando made one that only has units in the players area

3 - I think people can handle a big file if they downloaded FDF at 460 mb and CSLA 2 at 216 mb, or an alternative to that could be the same thing except with less addons and more BIS addons, less effects, etc for people with slower PCs,

Im no expert... but wouldn't Flashpoints 64 group restriction make it hard to have everywhere populated? Especially for the civilians... because if you don't want 6-12 of them all walking around following eachother, then your going to run out of groups fast. Like I said tho... Im no expert, and perhaps there is a way around this.

Honestly I think your best course of action would be a small series of strung together missions. It will not be totally persistent.... but you could still give the same feel. Either way Im pretty sure you will have to make some sacrafices to make this work, but perhaps when ArmA comes out that will change a bit.

If you really want to give this a try and see what you can do, Id like to try and help. Im not that great at anything... but I can make maps, and I have some fairly good mission makeing skills.

you are right but you can work around it make a 12 man civi squad then if you just want a unit to stand still use

dostop this in its init field

if you want other units to act if there on their own use domove command

theres ways to make it look like there not in one squad

also 63 groups per side

so 63x12 of civillians

63x12 west

63x12 east

63x12 of resistance

thats a hell load of people isnt it ?

plus for hunters instead of arming a civillian with a kozlice use a resistance soldier to save more groups for civiallians

and so on when i complete my campaign and armed assault is out or ofp2 i will probaly make a start to this kind of mission

but there is a style of mission wich Thobson is working on called Abandoned armies its in the beta forums on OFPEC try it out

Alright, you convinced me. Maybe one big mission really overstrains OFP.

Making a campaign seems to be more clever smile_o.gif.

First of all we've got some things to do, before we start creating the mission:

<ul>

[*]Find more people to help us smile_o.gif

[*]Decide which character you play

[*]Island to use

[*]Missions to be included

[*]Raw storyline (remember, as much freedom as possible)

[*]Something I forgot

I can also offer webspace.

no these kind of missions dont mix well in campaign restricts the freedom because you will have to have objectives per mission

but im willing to help a little at the moment

you could play as an exUS soldier who was kicked out the army

island should be Malden its a nicer place then everon and its not as laggy as Nogova

you play as a civillian for a while news keeps stirring up about Russian plans no one knows whats going on

one day you go along your original day but when you come across the beach you notice some things out at sea wich is a russians sub/lst with lots of bmp's coming to the sore

so that point you must rush home and from then on its up to you stay there get captured hide out in a forest start a resistance group ask friends if they want to join

and so on

the more attacks you do the more skilled your squad gets the more civillians are willing to join for that you must infiltrate a town take out guards and ask if they want to join

also if youve seen the multiple squad leader script wich lets you lead more than 1 squad you can have that have a few small squads so on.

something youve forgotten could be realism i cant think of what to add but all day patrols, convoys, scouts, weapon jamming's, a radio frequency's so yuo can scan the enemys or just change frequenci if your getting tapped.

hope that helps a bit

Thanks too all people willing to help me smile_o.gif!

456820, that's exactly what I mean.

but perhaps when ArmA comes out that will change a bit.

Right, and because ArmA will be downwards compatible, it will be worth it. We will be able to update the mission!

Still, we could need some more help. Maybe some mapfact guys wink_o.gif?
