walker 0 Posted November 30, 2004 Hi all I have just started seeing reports that Lycos have introduced a screen saver that spams spamers. It is a product called Anti-Spam Redux. It basicly performs a not quite DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack on sites used by spamers to sell their goods. All the spammers are taken from the lists of known spamers that are already blacklisted. Human beings control the process so it wont actualy take the servers down but it will cost them lots of money in exess bandwidth; hence a not quite DDOS. If you want to find out about it do a search on Lycos Anti Spam. No major media has wrote it up yet but you should start seeing reports over the next two days. I am going to reserve judgement till I see what more people have to say in the computer and security press. Also I want see some reviews before I consider installing it as a product. It would be just the kind of product to include spyware or other botware. Kind Regards Walker

walker 0 Posted November 30, 2004 Hi All Err Lycos is German I think not American but I could be wrong. If you are paying for bandwidth rather than have unlimited obviously not such a good idea but since the product limits it self to to a max of 3mb a day you dont take a big hit as an individual. Err it is a screen saver Avon so it does not work when you are typing. Unless you are talking about the internet itself slowing down. That of course is how it works it is spread over multiple users if 10m download it would add up to 33TB of data. Hence the possibility of the internet it self slowing down if millions use it. The abuse angle is perfectly valid and why I want to see what a few more Security sites have to say about it. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/26/lycos_europe_spam_blitz/ The program is titled Make Love Not Spam, and is available for Windows and Mac OS. Using a program to commit a DDOS attack is clearly against the law but as there are human beings in the loop it then becomes questionable whether it is a DDOS as people are actualy chosing to hit the site and the since the product is set up to not actualy deny service it stops short each time. It is a grey area. Kind Regards Walker
Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted November 30, 2004 As much as we all hate Spam, I don't think its a solution to use a program that could potentially be found to be breaking the law. Therefore, BIS can not accept the promotion of products/software that are breaking the law, or have the potential to. I am therefore closing this.
