Hunting for Submarines

Recommended Posts

Guest RKSL-Rock

Well I'm making a Nimrod MR2 - essentially a sub hunter.

Its armed with 9x Stingray (CoC Mk46) torpedoes and it needs something to shoot at...SO I'm in need of some submarines.

I ALREADY HAVE:

Klink's CWK-SubTarget

Everon Cartel's "Kilo" Submarine

Has anyone got or in the process of making some? I seem to remeber someone had a "Typhoon" and an "Akula" in the works...anyone know anything?

More Nimrod pics....

Its currently flying about with basic textures so the pics above do NOT represent the final product.

hmmm... not completely sure, but i deffinatly saw something over at flashpoint.ru showing pics of a sbmerging sub etc... quite a large russian one

just one question - isn't the Nimrod now also used in search and rescue work? I was sure they sent these ones out to search for stricken vessels etc

Ok who knows whats russian for Submarine?

Yeah, MR2 are used for Search And Rescue but their primary War time role is Sub Hunting.

The R1 is ELINT and Jamming (although the RAF/MoD will deny it) Anyone near Waddington will know about this...Fried Cell phone anyone?

The only other sub I know of came with the WWII addon pack. But it was a german u-boat.

Besides that I am not aware of any others.

I'm not sure on submarines in the making, but I think the one from Flashpoint.ru was from a different game used for the video the author made. I may be wrong though. I would love to see a more updated Sub for this beautiful plane to hunt biggrin_o.gif

It looks like a big plane.I wonder if the AI can takeoff and land the beast.Hunting subs seems like a good idea but in the OFP enviroment could it actually work. You would need a tiny island with a large runway so as to have the ability to be able to use the map as we all know that when you leave the map screen you have no way of knowing where anything is rock.gif .

Course it's a big plane, it's got like 13 crew members and millions of electronics in it. And it's British, we build big things that don't look as though they fly, ie Nimrod + Vulcan.

Philcommando did a german U-boat. I believe. You could always attempt to make one though if worst comes to worst.

I was being slightly sarcastic as large planes in OFP have a tendancy for not flying correctly. Also i would assume that this plane would fly at altitudes way above the OFP limit..

The AI can take off, attack ships and land quite easily.  If it couldnt i wouldnt release it.

Positional info is down to mission makers....waypoints are a wonderful thing.

Well acutally the Nimrod is rather odd in the way it performs its SAR and Sub-Hunting roles.  It flys at about 1000ft (333m) ASL (Above Sea Level)  so it will be 'useable' in OFP.  It's one of the reasons I chose it.

Ah thats the one i saw then...shame its dead.

E-3D Sentry and Nimrod R1's are based at Waddington (I currently live ~5 miles down the road from there, and watch the aircraft coming and going from my flat)

MR2's are mainly at Kinloss in Scotland, but can be deployed to whereever they're needed.

Ontopic:

Looking good Rock, this sort of stuff (airfields and whatnot) are what is really missing from OFP, and the fact you're making Brit stuff, spot on!

Edit:

Looks like they've given up dening the R1's existance

Official RAF website Scroll down a fair way, and you'll see RAF Waddington.

Official RAF website Scroll down a fair way, and you'll see RAF Waddington.

They 'outed' the R1 after they stuffed one some times back and had to commisioned project "Anneka" - it was 'Top secret' at the time but after they involved 12 subcontractors the word got out. The project was to convert a previously stored AEW3 fuseelage into an R1 one rapidly (they did it at huge expense in 9 weeks).

When I said the RAF/MoD was denying something i was refering to the Jamming capabilites of the R1. Its somethign like the mongrel child of an EC-135, a S-3 Viking and a P-3 Orion, with longer legs than all of them.

The jamming suites work in the same way as the EF-111 Raven's system. It detects radar, radio, micorwave etc and either records it for analysis or jamms it being sending out high power 'white noise' on the same frequencies.

Usually they turn off the ELINT/Jamming suite well offshore. On a few occasions they have neglected to turn it off...the result was a large number of mobile phones blew.

Yeah plus it's hard to spot a sub from 10,000 ft.

So they find them by looking out of the windows do they... tounge_o.gif.I thought they would of used satalites or some other type of electronic detection equipment.Oh well you learn something new every day...  rock.gif

If I could only get my hands on the models of Janes Fleet Command/Sub Command ships and subs, we'd solve most of our ship/sub problems quite quickly.  However, their models are compressed in an unconvertable format used by the game.

Pity, really sucks not having a good Sovernmeny Destroyer, a Slava Cruiser , LA Improved sub, or an Akula around.

...sarcasm aside they use sonar buoys, SLAR, P-IRST and a variety of other gizmo's including the DERA Sub hunter torpedo system (Which i can remeber the proper name of - but if i find the link i'll post it)
