We have to have it or else our army would not consist of few hundred thousand men but few hundred men. Trust me, very little people would enlist voluntarily. Sweden has conscription? i never would have thought that of all counties Sweden would have still required young people to give some of their time in the military. are they planning on ending it. i know Germany is supposed to stop somewhere in 2008. Well all men aged 18 must come to the "enlisting" thingy where they do psychological, physical and intelligence tests on you. Only 1/3 get to / have to do the service though since they are forced to save money. There are no plans of switching from the conscription system although IIRC ~6 officers requested a change claiming it would be cheaper and more effective. Blah blah blah, blah blah.
