pogingwapo 0 Posted June 28, 2004 Hello everyone. They put me in-charge of five computers here at the office but I am no expert in troubleshooting. Does anyone here know telltale signs of computer damage. Already three PCs are damaged. I did not know how it happened Does anyone know what successive beeping sounds mean? Then the PC doesn't boot. And is it OK not to have a voltage regulator? Please tell me the warning signs or indications of PC damage.
Ninja_STO 0 Posted June 28, 2004 Since I have messaged you and determined you are in the Philippines (and since I travel there often I know a little about it), your voltage standard there is 220 or 240 volts, and some computers are set to run on 110 or 120 volts. Most PC power supplies that I have used have a little switch on them that you can select which voltage you are using, and this allows you to use the computer without the need for a voltage regulator. This is not a feature known to many people, and since some computers are shipped from countries such as the US, they are set on the 110/120V by default. The beeping sounds are possibley your computer's overheat alert, warning you that the components are overheating. If I am correct about the power supply being set incorrectly and not using a voltage regulator, then it's very possible that the overpowering is causing the computer to heat up and burn out. If it shuts down and won't reboot, means more than likely something inside has fried. Best thing you can do before plugging in a computer is look near the plug that powers the computer. It's the odd-shaped one. Next to it should be a very small slide swith with the voltages listed on it, and make sure it's set to the voltage of the country you are in (in your case, 220/240V). If the power supply lacks this switch for some reason, then you must make sure to use a voltage regulator recommended for this range of electronics. Check with a computer shop, there is a real good one up in Glorietta near TimeZone arcade, just can't remember the store's name They have internet and gaming services, but also sell a lot of equipment at decent prices. (Like I said, I go there often ) If you need more help on other technical issues, you can post here or message me and I'll help as best I can. Hope this helps you determine the problem. benu 1 Posted June 28, 2004 Beeping when you turn on the computer is normally a message from the bios. Try to find a manual for your motherboard, the beep sequences should be documented there.
WhoCares 0 Posted June 28, 2004 The Beep-Code is an error message in case the computer can't boot because one/some of its hardware component(s) is/are broken, e.g. the grafic adapter. The Code is usually explained in the manual of the motherboard. Alternatively you might check some tech support webpages.
