Winters 1 Posted May 15, 2004 Hi All, Despite all the nastiness in Iraq (please leave all that in the Iraq thread, thanks) today is Armed Forces Day here in the US. Armed Forces Day History I am heading to the USS Intrepid later to meet some old buddies and talk about the old days while we drink ourselves into a stupor. EDIT: Ha Ha Ha - I put Nimitz instead of Intrepid, yeah i am going with my friends to a Nuclear Powered Carrier thats still on duty to get drunk LMAO
denoir 0 Posted May 15, 2004 What's the difference between veterans day armed forces day? Do you have any additional military holidays?
dinger 1 Posted May 15, 2004 Armed Forces Day Memorial Day Veterans Day pretty soon Presidents' day. There are others in the works, but they won't be implemented until Year IV at least. in all seriousness, happy AF day folks!
Winters 1 Posted May 15, 2004 Armed Forces Day is not a "holiday" like Veterans Day or Memorial Day. It was established as a way to bring Civilians and Military personel together to promote a better understanding of the military by civilians.
hellfish6 7 Posted May 15, 2004 Veteran's Day is the day we honor the living and dead veterans of (most often) our wars. I believe many countries have Armistice Day, which is quite similar in design. Armed Forces Day is when we honor those currently serving. Memorial Day... hm... now that I think about it, it's a lot like Veteran's Day but we're supposed to honor those killed in wars. And like Dinger said, don't be suprised if there's a "Liberation of Iraq" Day or a 9/11 holiday coming as well.
