denoir 0 Posted April 16, 2004 It's a ground/vehicular laser target designator methinks. It lookes like a beefed up version of the AN/TVQ-
hellfish6 7 Posted April 16, 2004 I think Denoir's right. I was going to say that it was the new Zeus Humvee with the laser for exploding UXO, but it looks like this:
MLF 0 Posted April 17, 2004 cheers guys, i thought it was somin like that but then i thought it could have bee that new fangled device that tells you where sniper shots come from.
PhilippRauch 0 Posted April 18, 2004 ok.. my 5cents ;) i think its more like an IR-surveillance "Tool" ... i think so because of the large ventillating vents on that thing.. those ir-imaging devices need alot of cooling to function correctly, thus these large vents for the AC inside that box.. and because on one pic you can see thats the uparmoured version of the hmmwv, its very likely to be a scout unit which likes to use those ir devices to spot enemy etc... on the third pic you can see its also mounted on a hmmwv from the AirCav (their logo is on the magazine box of the machinegun) so it could be a laserdesignator also... but my bet (5cents) is on this being a IR surveillance device... hellfish6 7 Posted April 18, 2004 G/VLTDs I think have thermal sights so yes, it's entirely possible that they're using the vehicle for that instead of it's primary function of designating targets for airstrikes. This humvee probably belongs to the recon troop of a brigade combat team, and won't be found in normal line units. However, the 1st Cavalry Division isn't "AirCav" anymore. They are now an armoured division, and cavalry only in name.

hellfish6 7 Posted April 19, 2004 Yeah, we don't really have any "AirCav" units left, save for a squadron in an aviation brigade and a troop or two in a divisional cavalry squadron, but they're almost exclusively recon units with Kiowas and Apaches and a couple of specialized Blackhawks, not airmobile troops (which the 101st Airborne specializes in).
