Partitioning without loosing

Recommended Posts

IS there a program out there that can partition my ordinary harddisk without all this FAT32xxxxx16 nonesense that I dont understand???

All I want to do is create a second bootable partition and install Windows 98 in it so I got a rescue boot. (Cause I got no floppy yet)

I'd be careful of Partition Magic. used it once, worked fine, needed to change the partition sizes later, and it wouldn't recognize my hard drive rock.gif

parted can resize FAT partitions, its a Linux app but you can use it from a bootdisk(which you can burn to a bootable CD if you dont have a floppy drive), or use some CD based linux distro which includes it, like Knoppix.

Or you could just use Knoppix as your rescue boot cd :P

Yes I found many that can deal with FAT, but the make one accessible by XP you need ParticionMagic. But quite frankly 69 USD is quite a lot for a home use solution. I will check in the shop tomorrow! mad_o.gif

Hmm, you dont need Partition Magic for XP to access FAT partitions, it can handle both NTFS and FAT.

Albert, if all you want is to be able to access your data on an NTFS drive if Windows XP really craps out on you, download this boot disk program: http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm

It will let you read and copy data from NTFS drives. I used it before to help a friend rescue some word doccuments for school after his Windows XP really bit the dust. Of course,to rescue files that won't fit on a floppy might be another matter if you don't have a second hard drive/partition....

A cost free way of doing this is if you have some disk space somewheres.

I would transfer my files to another drive, partition the one in need and move the files back

Please note: If you are running Winxp, changing your boot drive will require reactivation or reinstall
