Red dawn and the hind

Recommended Posts

I would like some opinions about how to solve the Red Dawn mission. I have tried the walkthrough of the prisma official strategy guide. According to this I should fly a Hind. I hate flying in OFP. It's difficult to see and steer the Hind. I usually

crash. When I ordered another man as pilot he don't land where I tell him to go.

Also the guide tells me to order the hind gunner to shoot one short burst at the UAZ.

How do I order such a thing? I can only tell him to target it or?

Can the mission be finished without using the HInd?

Using the Hind is the quickest way to beat the mission. Also, you don't need to capture Guba in order to complete the mission. Blowing him into tiny pieces will work...

You tell the gunner to target the hind and switch to manual fire, then you fire the short burst. You should save first incase you kill him by acident cause it feels better to throw him out the door in the sea biggrin_o.gif . Shortly after capture, Guba will tell you there is another scud about to be launched, you will have to move fast towards North/ NE to destroy it and i remember there were a whole bunch of shilkas spread around the place on the hills and very hard to bypass.

I remember close to that place there was also another hind with its crew outside. What else do i remember... ah yes, you could try to destroy the boat that Guba will use to escape from Kolgujev and take out the hind before you capture him but he will be very hard to find and theres plenty of scatered soldiers and armor around the island.

I only did this mission once, and didnt like the black op, M113 driver, hind pilot super rambo soldier design, very bad for a game that was considered simulation but i just had to finish this great game, this was ages ago, makes me feel very old sad_o.gif .

You can dodge Shilka fire by making sure to stay above at least 150 on your speed indicator. Note the tracer direction and try to avoid it. Flying in may seem suicide but I managed to do it. I only lost one guy (the medic, how ******* annoying) for standing next to a bunch of Satchel charges primed for a T-80.

Practice chopper control. Goto Mission Editor and learn to fly the gunships. Remember to Auto Hover at a distance from your landing spot and if you are in command press the "DEL" key on the Num Pad to bring up the command view which can give you a better view of your surrounding (and you can see if there is an enemy around a blind corner smile_o.gif )

Hit the "DEL" key to return to 1st/3rd person view.

How the heck did you get as far as "Red Dawn" without learning to fly choppers??

Anyways, I never use the choppers in that mission.

To me, that mission is a perfect example of a "quick and dirty" spec op mission.   You gotta be able to plan and act fast.

What I did was I immediately grabbed 3 or 4 of my men all armed with RPG's.   We jumped into the Hummvee, and raced up north east to a point on the main road to intercept GUBAs jeep.

We parked the hummer behind a patch of woods as to not attract any attention with it.  I had my men take out the nearby enemy tanks and then quickly hide on the hill top.  I waited prone on a nearby hill and watched.

As Guba's car appeared in the distance, I waited until it came close enough.  When it did, I started shooting at it with my MP-5.  Make sure you aim low as to hit the doors and tires.  You just want to make them stop, not kill anyone inside.  You don't want to risk killing Guba.

When the car stops a few spetznats jump out.  Kill them immediately.  When they are all dead, get up and snatch Guba, he will be defensless.

When you have him, he will tell you something.

Afterwards get you, and all your men, and Guba back in the Hummer and race back to base.  Drop your men and Guba off with the rest of your men, who will all gaurd Guba.

Then jump into the little jeep there and race all the way up to find your second objective.    Destroy it, and then hide in the woods nearby and wait for it all to end.

By the way, doesn't anyone find it interesting that the name of the mission where you capture Guba was called Red Dawn when the Operation that was intended to and successfully caught Saddam Hussein was also called Red Dawn?

Yes. There was a thread about it in the OT section wink_o.gif .

I find it especially awkward to fly the heli in this mission since it's not daylight. I saved my game while in the Hind. Then when I loaded it my NV goggles was off and I couldn't put them on inside the Hind.

But still apart from this I do find it more difficult to control the

Hind compared to earlier choppers.

Yes I could kill Guba and the mission ended later with a cutscen depicting a scud launch and a nuclear explosion followed by WW 3, and then no more missions to do.

But I find it almost impossible to do something in the Hind. If I order the gunner to target the Tank nothing happens. When I land the finish me as soon as I get out.

It has happened that the UAZ was disabled without killing Guba. But I didn't survive on the ground. Is it possible to reach the second Scud with the M113? Controlling the

Heli drives me mad.

I remember i tried the M113 once, there were rpg's, tanks, bmp's, shilkas...

After you capture Guba you will have a time limit to intercept the scud launch, so the hind is the fastest and safest way to get there.

To target the uaz you can left click it directly if it is in sight, or you can left click on the radar to get a target lock, then just manually shoot whatever you find apropriate (note that the A.I. gunner usually wastes too many rockets wich you will need to blow up the shilkas), i recomend manual fire.

You can select your nvg's by pressing "N" key, the hind is hard to manuever, it responds very slow to your controls but it has heavy armor, heavy weapon load and looks badass, you will love it the more time you spend with it tounge_o.gif .

How in the world did you get this far?

load everyone in the hind, u as pilot,

fly to the east coast then north to the northern part of the island,

take out shilkas in this area

scud could be in 3 locations...

atlighthouse near

large building at northern tip of island...

or inland (directly west from lighthouse)

Take out scud...then hover around area until guba comes up the road in his uaz, then blast his ass!! biggrin_o.gif

I did get this far and remember there were not many missions were you could fly choppers. And I also had some red crosses.

But I can tell you that I ask myself this question when I consider certain missions. For example when you should fly planes. I had no control got the plane in the air by accident and the mission ended and the next wait for a while then eject.

Also there was a mission early on where you ended up alone in darkness without NV goggles. During that mission I gave up

OFP for while.
