Huge problem with ofp

Well when i tried to reinstall ofp GOTY i get this error "missing addons 0.pbo" and the setup stops and ive already spent about 150 dollars on ofp i have 3 ofps now and i cant get it working

and yes all 3 dont work

Is O.pbo on the CD? I'm not exactly sure where it'd be(I don't have GOTY), but check in various folders for like a folder named Res, then in the Res folder, a directory named Addons.

If not, copy O.pbo from the CD to that dir.

Might wanna try see if Windows still has OFP on the Registry.

Enter Regedit in Run in the start menu, or, Control panel, uninstall, see if opflash is on the list somewhere. Delete, then try reinstall.

Be careful though. Do so at your own risk.

Do other people use your computer?

Did any of them start an Admin?

If an admin is locking you out, and noone else uses your computer. You could be looking down the barrel of a full system re-install.

If it is XP, Windows 2000 or NT.

Whoever has the Admin account needs to do the intalls. It is part of security.

I am guessing it is your Mum or your (older?) brother or possibly you have seperate admin account with a password

Who did the install?

Is the computer on a network? If so is it linked to an XP server?

I talked to him last night via IM, and he said he had XP Home(is it possible to disable regedit in home?), and that the only accounts that it showed in ControlPanel/user accts, were his, and the guest account(which was turned off).  He said he wasn't in a network or running a server.

edit: oh, and he couldn't get to M$'s site, or like google, it gave him this one screen thing instead, and he said he got some message about a virus thing, I can't remember for sure how it was worded.

From your description of the problem

Two possibilities

One

He needs to find who has the Admin account

If it is a family member they need to do the install.

If he does not know who that is he needs to contact the company who sold them the computer and have their support check it out.

Two

Rather more worrying is the inability to get to Microsoft and the virus warning. That sounds to me like his computer's admin account has been taken over by someone else running a trojan. In other words probably someone has taken his computer over either by one of the spammers to use as a mail droper or as a store for porn or to use as a cracker attack bot.

If it is the latter he may need to do a reinstall and make sure he has a firewall and virus checker running before he connects to the net for the first time. Then straight to Microsoft to register and dload the latest security patches.

I know from my last install on a computer that was connected to the net before the firewall was up it took less than 2 minutes for the system to be attacked by the W32.Blaster.Worm and latter its antithesis W32.Welchia.Worm. The W32.Welchia.Worm is bad because of its proliferation and the amount of pings it puts out which downgrades the web for everyone.

As well as direct port scanning attacks there are a lot of IRC and Kazza based attacks at the momment.

You have 3 versions of Ofp and they wont install? Do you only have one cd drive? I would try a different drive and check your dma settings (In Win98 would be drive properties of the cd drive in system properties)

My dvd rom is sensitive to what it likes to read

Yes I put that as my second more worrying option

As well as a virus checker you need to have firewall. That way many viruses cant get on your system in the first place.

Your other problem with the amount of viruses you show is that some of them are almost certainly Trojans. In the main I would guess of the mail dropper type that use your machine as a spam port. I would suggest you go to the company that sold you your computer and make use of their support if at all possible.

Your computer will need a serious clean by your virus checker. There is then the rather worrying possibility your machine may have been used as a storage point or cracker attack bot. Take some advice from your computer supplier on whether you are best to salvage your data and do a complete reinstall for your own piece of mind and future security.

Just sorry you waisted your time and money of buying extra copies of OFP when you did not need to. Make sure all your family are aware of what has happened; what needs to be done to remedy it and what needs to be done inthe future to prevent it. XP has a security policy system you may want to read up on it. Make sure you consult with your family on all this as they use the computer as well.

Make sure you set up proper user accounts and seperate admin accounts. As the admin accounts have extra privledges only turn them on when you need to. That will help prevent programs such as trojans being installed in the first place. Make sure your Virus Checker and Firewall are up to date.
