Rogue 0 Posted December 14, 2001 The advance command is a nice implementation, but a bounding overwatch movement technique would be even better, as it can be seen in Ghost Recon. The method is simple, on the open field an ai soldier (or part of the group) travels about 50m while the other soldier (or other half of the group) is observing the terrain from a stationary location. If the first group has approached the 50m mark, it goes either crouched or prone, and the 2nd group starts to travel, secured by the first group- then the process repeats. If terrain with cover is available, instead of doing strictly 50m dashes, a part of the group should travel to the next cover available, even if its only 10m, then the second group travels. Gaswell 1 Posted December 14, 2001 I've noticed that if you're leading a two-man team, with the AI guy set to danger/stealth and engage at will, you can do bounding overwatch with the AI guy automatically. Unfortunately, with 12-man teams you'll do a one-eleven bounding overwatch, which is kinda putting a lot of faith in the squad leader...
Guest Scooby Posted December 14, 2001 There should be ability to send two men to front in every possible formation as scouts. I would like to see some additional scripted movements added into OFP to create some atmosphere such as "area free of enemies", "enemies ahead", "Air threat", "Halt", "Down", "Form line", "Form left sided line", "Form column", etc, etc, etc... MP 0 Posted December 14, 2001 You can... Tell your 2 of your men to advance. They will move about 70-100m ahead and move exactly with you as if they were in formation. Advance dose not mean "RUN AND KEEP RUNNING TILL YOU DIE!!!"
Mister Frag 0 Posted December 14, 2001 Just issue "Danger" and "Keep Low" orders...
Gaswell 1 Posted December 14, 2001 If I remember correctly the "Advance", "Stay back", "Flank left/right" orders makes the selected guy(s) move ahead, back, left/right (respectively) in increments of 50 meters. Two "Advance"s mean 100 meters ahead, and so forth. That is 100 meters ahead relative to the guy(s) exact position in the current formation, mind you. zovirl 0 Posted December 20, 2001 Mister Frag is right...the key is to use the DANGER combat mode. And thanks Gaswell for the info about the advance command working in increments. I didn't know it worked that way. From what I could tell though, the increments are 40m, not 50m. (With one other soldier, he stands 4m away to your right when he is in formation. 4 flank right commands send him 164m away...) I researched all the radio commands (especially the different combat modes, formation commands, and engagement orders). The Avon Lady was kind enough to host the document I wrote up at her site. If you want to read it, go to her OFP faq at http://www.theavonlady.org/theofpfaq/ and search for "commander guide"
Rogue 0 Posted December 20, 2001 Thanks, but i already knew that . I meant like its implemented in Ghost Recon, where not the whole group is walking from cover/position to cover/position at once, but automatically divide and leapfrog from position to position, while one group watches the other travels, changing roles constantly- bounding overwatch. Sure, you can do this manually with alot usage of the command menu, but thats not what i had in mind.
Gaswell 1 Posted December 20, 2001 It should be possible to make a bounding overwatch script - the real trick would be to make it useful in the context of the current command menu system, ie. so that only the selected squad members will do bounding overwatch. zovirl, nice work on the commander guide. I wished I had such a guide when I first started learning about the command system. I've even got a remark too. The "Wait for me" command is useful to give to a vehicle that you've already ordered to move somewhere. The vehicle will stop and wait until you get on board, then continue to its previous designation.
zovirl 0 Posted December 20, 2001 Gaswell, could you explain exactly how to get that "wait for me" command to work? I can't seem to get it to actually happen...
dayglow 2 Posted December 20, 2001 just diviide up half your team and assign them to red or what ever, have them advance, then you move with your team, call them to advance. Thats what I do and it works good. Also when the team gets where I want them to go I tell them to 'scan horizan' It seems to make them see better and get threats before they pop me on the advance. Gaswell 1 Posted December 21, 2001 @zovirl Ahem... it sure doesn't work the way I said. Car drivers will do a full stop (with "Wait" as status until you get on board), while armored vehicles just continue on their merry way without noticing. I could've sworn I remembered how that one worked. I must be getting old and rusty...
