Twilight 2000 - good concept?

Recommended Posts

I did a search and found nothing.

Wouldnt Twilight 2000 have been a great base for a campaign in OFP? After all there's almost everything you need to do a good scenario/campaign.

I loved the RPG but it was sometimes hard to find players and tough to make missions due to it's large scale nature.

Great game! Been wondering if I was the only OFP player who was a veteran of the 5th ID's push for Kalisz, the Krakow intrigues and battle of Warsaw.

For the unwashed ... it's a military role-playing game, written in the late 80s, I think, and set five years into World War III, in 2000, and initially in Poland. The nukes flew, but slowly, so the game is NOT a full-on Mad Max, crossbows-and-football-pads Gamma World game. Instead, you're part of a small unit cut off from what's left of NATO forces in Europe, and you've got to survive in country that's a mix of Pact forces, bandits and deserters. What vehicles you have don't work well and now function on alcohol, rather than gas.

Lotta fun, very detailed military sim, with all manner of modern weapons available, and a few speculative ones based on what the game designers thought warfare in 2000 would look like. From where I sit, it'd make a great OFP campaign if somebody went to the trouble of scripting the role-playing part of it.

Description posted above. It's a great CRPG set in a fictional(well it almost became reallity) WWIII Europe.

I was thinking of a campaign setting with multiplayer options.

Btw Johnny. I might have the rulebooks in some closet somewhere smile_o.gif. Scripting while demanding isn't totally impossible.

Yeah, loved Twilight 2000: the only RPG I ever coinvinced my budies to play besides D&D.

Yes, I think the T2000 storyline would make an awesome OFP campaign.

I've also got the Twilight 2000 PC game buried at home somewhere: I think it's on 5 1/4" floppies!

I have TONS of TW2000 stuff. I use the vehicle guides all the time, too, for research purposes (they TO&Es are very authentic and useful). Plus, it was just a great storyline. If anybody wants help with this campaign, lemme know. I've got some semi-useful mission making skills and a whole lotta materiel from the game.

I remember someone back in the OLD days (summer 2001, when OFP first came out) was making a Twilight 2000 mod/campaign, but I haven't heard from that guy in ages. He ran the Resistance clan... anyone remember? rock.gif

This page has the most useful info and links I've seen for the game thus far:

Yeah, we tried playing it while I was in the Army and the result was that it was too much like being in the Army. We barracks rats wanted an escape, not more Army!

For me, OFP is what I always wanted T:2000 to be.

It would be neat to have a post-apocalyptic campaign, though, with "hot spots" and cumulative radiation poisoning, mixtures of weaponry and uniforms and vehicles.

I've got (2nd ed.)

Core rules books

Infantry weapons guide

Heavy weapons guide

Also got some 1st ed. stuff too.

I think the book i have covers the initial phase. You start out in Poland when hell breaks loose.

What island would suit TW2000 best?

Perhaps we could convice someone to do a "Polish" island smile_o.gif

I would say this is one of the best ideas IMHO.

I will GLADLY donate my mod tounge_o.gif  biggrin_o.gif  (Sinews of War), which handles the saving of vehicles/weapons/units from mission to mission in MP, to anyone who wishes to tackle this as a MP project. I will work to configure it specifically for this idea if it becomes reality. I would start a TW:2000 campaign myself, but I have already commited myself to my own MP campaign idea for SOW 2's initial release.

If memory serves, the first mission/module was called "The Free City of Krakow" wasn't it?

I'll have to dig out my books and have another read...

I also got the Merc:2000 campaign extension, where instead of being set in a post-apocalyptic setting you play a globe-trotting mercenary in a more conventional modern day setting. The had other spinoffs too: Dark Conspiracy - an X-Files type campaign where you play a group of paranormal investogators...

But the base Twilight: 2000 campaign would be an awesome OFP setting, I think.

Could you script in radiation poisoning? In the RPG, each character had a "Rads" score...and the higher this got with exposure, the more sick they became...

It's a pity that BIS took away the damage control function from OFP (probably to halt cheating). It makes it hard to emulate levelling and hp increase. I don't remember if TW2000 used the traditional levelling though.

As for the radiation, as long as you dont kill the player i guess you could do that. Once you are dead though, it's over.

Ooooh, I remember Twilight 2K from when I had begun to drift away from RPG's back in the late 80's. That would make a sweet addon IMHO.

I had been thinking how a "Road Warrior" addon might be cool, with "A-Team" constructed dune buggies and all bristeling with armor and whatnot, but this would make for quite a suitable substitute I think.

After the "Escape from Kalisz" mini-module that came with the game, there was "Free City of Krakow", then "Pirates of the Vistula," then one set in Warsaw, then one where you ride a train to Germany to catch the last ship back to the United States, then one where you run around trying to liberate south Texas from Russians (and Cubans, I think) who occupied San Antonio. Wasn't there one about an uprising in Pennsylvania, too, and another about finding a working attack submarine?

My books are long gone. But weird what your memory retains after 12-13 years, eh?

Those are the ones I think would be good to start with. I think using Nogova as suggested in the add-on forum would suffice.

Most of the addons (equipment, vehicles etc.) should already exist.

If anyone wants to put together a Twilight OFP mod team, count me in. I'm not much of an addon maker, but happy to help out with ideas and in mission making.
