Access violation. Illegal read

Recommended Posts

Been getting this crash error in Re forger constantly. It usually occurs around 30 minutes to an hour of play time. It just randomly happens no matter what I am doing. I have searched all over the internet and discord and cannot find what would be causing it. I have seen a lot of unanswered posts and threads on it.  I have done the following trying to fix the issues

  • Updated Drivers
  • Reinstalled Game
  • Updated Firewall
  • Run as admin mode

I have a RTX 4090 and I9 13900KS

Yeah this seems to be something new going on. I never use to have this problem and I've played since the release of Arma 2. I was talking to someone recently with a 3090 who is having the exact same issue. I don't use mods or anything I just play on the official conflict servers.  It makes me not want to even play because I lose my slot on the server most of the time when I get kicked. Hopefully someone from bohemia will look at this thread and find a solution.

I may have found something that is working in my case. It looks like for whatever reason my profile folder is set to read only so when any changes are made to the profile it crashes the game due to not having access. I put this in the startup command line for arma reforger and launched the game. Closed it and relaunched and I've been playing for over an hour no problem. I'll update this thread if I have any more issues. Hopefully this works for some of you. From what I gather this launch parameter creates a new profile folder that reads and writes.

Launch Parameter Fix

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma Reforger -profiles=Profiles

I dont think it will solve problem - i have had a profiles folder in the reforger dir all the time.

Also note that the parameter is -profile  and not -profiles

Ill check if my folder is read only.

Do you have one drive on your computer? If so is your Arma Re forger documents going into your One Drive > Documents?

Yeah, I had everything from reforger saving there and I moved it to my local documents. Worked for about an hour and I crashed, same error. I'm stumped. Have you ran into anything new?

Is my arma reforger profile folder suppose to be set at read only? Still not able to figure this out and getting same error.

I have tried all various types of startup parameters including memory allactor and profile and its still not working. I am beginning to think this specific error SymGetSymFromAddr:487, has something to do with windows 11 and one drive. I will continue to keep the thread updated with any findings. If anyone out there has any ideas please respond on this thread. I eagerly await your posts.

Thanks

Ok im pretty sure i fixed my issue - been running now for 2 days without any crashes, today game has been running 4hours.

I did 2 things still have to figure out which fixed it.

I uninstalled all i could find on the pc that had anything to do with nvidia. Then reinstalled the the nvidia app along with latest drivers.

The other thing i did was to disable hwaa in reforger settings. Tomorrow ill try to enable hwaa again and see what happens.

Ok another 2 hours with hardware aa on and still no crashes, must have been the Nvidia stuff  that did the trick.
