Hunter-killer (bas) singleplayer mission

Recommended Posts

This is a modification of the old OH-58 Kiowa mission 'Hunter-Killer' by The Pheonix:

Quote[/b] ]Fly a OH-58D Kiowa Warrior from the 3rd/17th Air Cavalry on armed reconnaissance flights scouting,

designating artillery and providing light fire support throughout the war torn island of Everon.

New features:

* One of the 3 Camps in the first Mission is now randomly placed.

  (15 possible locations, but still all are inside the red marked area)

* Ballistic Addon Studios Kiowas instead of BIs Kiowas.

* Different weaponloadouts each day.

* Old artillery system replaced by a single-mapclick system.

* New artillery is capable of different and multiple fire missions. (more than just one shell at a time)

* White phosphorus fire mission. (added for spotting, not for incendiary)

* Added sound for all radiotransmissions.

* Burning tanks.

* All helicopters with dust effect.

* White phosphorus effect.

* UH-60 landings in second mission improved.

* AIs at one forrest camp man the MG one after another if the gunner dies. (but only if the camp is still ok.)

Operation Flashpoint 1.91 and BAS Kiowa Pack needed.

(Download Kiowa Pack here until damaged zip on the BAS homepage is replaced: Operation Flashpoint CZ - BAS Kiowa Pack 1.1)

I hope it's ok for Pheonix that I modified the mission. His email is dead and he didn't respond in ICQ.

The only thing I need right now is a host for the 1.63MB zip or 1.52MB rar...  biggrin_o.gif

UPDATE July 8:

Version 1.1 is out

- lasertarget referencemapmarker added

- enemy attackers of 2nd day repositioned and deadzone trigger deleted

- grunt attack of 2nd day modified

- 2nd day intro improved

- corrected subtitles and briefing

Email me the mission. I'll host.

The original mission maker, Phoenix, left the community, after aggarvating quite a few people and being accused of some pretty bad things. Search and yee shall find. smile_o.gif

Thx smile_o.gif

Feedback is welcome.

If the Blackhawks at Provins colide or crash, let me know. - It took me one hour to find good landing spots, and then let the helos really land there with the help of snYpirs qick landing script.

But after a restart of my computer the AIs decided to land both blackhawks 50m left of the designated LZ - another restart and everything was ok... After that experience I programmed the choppers hovering 1m over the ground so they wont turn over if they land somewhere else.

Had to download the kiowa pack but the file at BAS seems broken. I kept getting a .ZIP error. I suggest anybody needing mayby try ofp.cz. I'll le you know when I've tried it myself. ( 56k modem - may be a few minutes ).

Just finished, yeah it works fine now. I have good memories of the original of this mission. Look forward to trying the shiny new version.

I placed a direct link to the CZ download above and reported the damaged file to BAS.

Have fun smile_o.gif. That's exactly why I thought the mission was worth a modernisation.

Oops! I'm not doing very well. Partly cause I'm out of practice with helos. The last three campaigns I've played have all been conducted on foot. I am finding though that the BAS Kiowa is one of the most fragile things I've ever flown. I've found a group of men just off the eastern edge of the search area and I have as yet been unable to deal with them. Theres a guy with a PK and he only needs to land four hits before my helo falls out of the sky. Intentional or not?

I don't know if its intend by BAS, but i had the same feeling when I first flew the mission with this addon. - It seems to be more fragile than the original OH-58.

Perhaps there are more details/windows were bullets can pass.

Another cause can be a trigger. Phoenix put one in, that kills the player if the gunner dies.

But for sure: Approaching mgs directly in this chopper is very dangerous.

Take cover as soon as possible after you found a camp, then use the artillery. Expose yourself only to enemy fire if absolute necessarry.

PS: The rear is a good bulletshield, if you come under fire fly straight away and get as low as possible.

You could lower the skill level of the Russian gunner to give the Kiowa a better chance of pulling away. Also check if the Kiowa's armor level is at maximum.

Armorlevel is at max.

I know now the difference: BIs Kiowa takes around 90 M60 bullets until enginefailure BAS' Kiowa needs only 80 bullets.

I don't think lowering the skill of the enemys is the right way (they are all at skill 0.5, like in the original).

The only risk you have in the mission is falling out of the sky, and with lower AI skills you would be almost invulnerable.

After playing the mission many times while editing it, i have to say the danger of beeing shot down is just ok - everytime you have to think twice if it's really necessary to make a direct run with helo weapons, or if you first wait behind cover for the fire mission to arrive.

In my opinion it's just right that a light recon helicopter is shot down easily if you don't fly fast enough. - It will really increase your OFP pilot skills.  wink_o.gif

Well, I'll add the options "normal enemys" and "veteran enemys" to the mission start in the next version.

normal=skill somewhat lower than 0.5

veteran=skill 0.5

Found the problem ( mine at least ) and its nothing to do with skill or damage. I was confused because I would take hits while it was happening but my problems lie in a trigger at Eb52 ( west of Provins ). Theres a group of russians hidden there, just outside of the search circle but still easily found. The problem seems to be that if you find them your fuel drops to zero and you die!

Not sure if this serves some purpose for the flow of the mission but I'd suggest it might need looked at. They're not so well hidden that finding them ( especially when they shoot so freely ) is tough to do.

Ah, yes I know the Trigger. I think Phoenix placed it there to protect the group on the first day: Group found - Player dead.

What do you suggest?

Hide the group somewhere else + remove the trigger, or keep it as a bad surprise for pilots that leave the mission area? smile_o.gif

Avonlady do you still think the enemy is sometimes to tough, so the skill menu is needed?

Btw one thing I'm planing for the next version is the possibility to place a referencemapmarker with the Kiowas laserdesignator.

Sounds good to me. The triggers only a problem cause its about 10 seconds from the search area. First time I played the mission these were the first guys I found.

Theres a nice big 'no fly zone'. I'm sure these boys would be much more at home there.

Or at least more varied. Surely every US soldier knows more than one swear word.

Well just because one is going to be vulgar is no excuse for being tedious or unoriginal. Somebody should invest in a dictionary of obscenity to provide adult mission makers with new ideas.

http://www.notam02.no/~hcholm/altlang/ht/English.html  may be useful  ( for over 18s only ).

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/rudelatin.htm for a couple of classier insults.

Some suggestions. Perhaps for a version 1.2?

There still seems to be some sort of instant death trigger. On the 3rd stage of the mission, where you are to take out the armour with the help of the AH-64, several times now, I've died without being shot at... Just slump over the controls for no reason whatsoever. Definitely not due to hostile fire.

Also, I don't know what Pheonix was thinking when he removed all firearms from the crew. Nearly every Army aviator entering a combat zone is going to at the very least have a hand gun.

Your copilot is unable to disembark from the OH-58. I really don't see the point in that either.

The sudden death in stage three seems to be caused by the loss of the Apache. It is a nuisance as the apache seems so random in its conduct and laser designating is hardly a reliable system with the AI.

As for the other two points I think thats so that the player must stay in and achieve the mission in their helo. This was a mission after all about air support and getting out could offer a number of avenues for cheating. Not that its impossible but this makes it harder.
