Noxis (NBKServers.co.uk)

Hardware performance use with a dedicated server.

Recommended Posts

Hi I run NBKServers.co.uk and we are just starting to run OFP. The server I have up at the moment seems to vary greatly in the CPU load it uses when compared to other game servers.

The OFP server when in deathmatch might sit at about 53% varying between 45% - 63%, a more complicated map with lots of vehicles etc wacks the CPU load right up to 100% (without AI as I know these load the CPU).

Now what I am wondering is whether this game is designed to simply use all available CPU resources.

What sort of Spec CPU is best to run say a 20 slot server smoothly? 800mhz? 1Ghz?

Hm, I fear that is not enough for a full scale MP game including vehicles and aircraft.

All I can say is that our server (specs below) starts struggling with 30 players. This doesn't mean it's unplayable but that's where desync spikes start to occur (#monitor shows 5-15 fps) and one of the CPUs reaches 97-99% load.

Of course it depends heavily on the amount of moving objects on the map, a Desert Island 30 player infantry only TDM map runs as smooth as single player if there are not too many high pingers on it. But where is the fun in that?

feel free to msg me if you have further questions but I am sure you could get more professional advice from one of the veteran server owners around.

Good luck

Shrike

I run a coop server (details below) as you have already stated the AI greatly increases server load as our maps are made by ourselves we tailor them to run smootly on our server with up to 24 players.

Great use of scripting to delete old units and spawn new enemy as youi approach an objective is essential to keep the server with 15+FPS.

A 1Ghz server will play DM/CTF for 12 people OK, but not coop maps with AI or DM/CTF with many vehicles.

Well at the moment 1.66Ghz runs a 20 player server just fine getting 50fps or more according to my Admin. This was with a custom map and several vehicles and a windows server.

I am assuming that the Linux port uses less CPU power?

What I like about this game is that it appears to use very little bandwidth.

Our dual 1.6Ghz server runs OFP on one of it's CPU's.

The other is allocated for OS and other services.

We can run 25-30 players if we just do infantry combat, which a few of our missions are designed specifically for this sort of load, no vehicles or other lag-beasts.

For games with vehicles usually 18-20 is the limit where we get a slight degradation in performance.

When FPS gets below 15 on the server it means it is using 100% CPU utilization so you can check your performance online if you are the admin.
