To that effect, they started introducing the steel helmet. Several months after the helmet's introduction, the British were surprised to see the number of soldiers with head wounds in hospitals shoot up over 100%! So, what the hell? Why did this happen? (If you listened to this particular Car Talk, let the other guys have a chance)<span id='postcolor'> I didn't look this time. Could it be because their heads stuck higher above the trenchline with the helmets on? How about those soldiers with helmets used to take them off and stand on them to get a better look out the trenches.

Tex -USMC- 0 Posted January 12, 2003 No, and no  The first time I saw the answer I couldn't believe how simple it was. You don't have to do any research or anything like that, or have intimate knowledge of ocular abnormalities

theavonlady 2 Posted January 12, 2003 I think I got it. Because beforehand, without a helmet, more people with head wounds died and didn't make it to the hospital. Now with helmets on, more soldiers were surviving head injuires, dramatically increases the number of such wounded who survived to the hospital.
