Gizmo mapping

I can apply a texture using the 'a' key, and stretching and fitting and then pressing 'b', but Gimbal was praising the Gizmo mapper tool, which I suspect is very similar to TexView that I am used to in Maya. Only thing is, I can load a texture into it, but I can't see the UV's that I'm supposed to be able to manipulate.. What is the procedure here?

Another thing.. After I've applied a texture using the 'a' and 'b' method, next time I load the model, the textures don't show up. Any way to restore the views so I can see them again?
