tazmania720 16 Posted April 14, 2015 Good evening. I had a thought today as I was working on a terrain and I haven't been able to find the answer; it is possible though I am searching the wrong words. Is it possible to take a satellite image and "carve" a heightmap from that? I have a region in mind that has some intricate waterways and using the tutorials I have found are not producing the detail I desire in the heightmap. Or maybe this is a better way to ask, is it possible to layer a satellite map over L3DT and carve away at that? Thanks and I hope I don't sound like a complete idiot. Richie 330 Posted April 14, 2015 You can import your sat into L3DT, it vanishes when you edit the height field but it'll help you do what you need hopefully. L3DT > File > Import > Texture Map... and then ok the warnings, browse to your satellite image and import, you might have to resize your sat though, 2048 works ok, larger files not always. Good luck :)
tazmania720 16 Posted April 14, 2015 Thanks for the reply. I did a little more digging around, focusing on some of the words you used in your post and this is what I found: http://www.bundysoft.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3141&p=11120 I am trying it now and you can "carve" with the satellite picture over the editable height field, you only have to click between the "tex mode" and "poly mode" buttons on the top. I am really excited!!!! Thanks the the better direction!!!!

I have a city area that is sort of Venice-esque. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7225557/Show/Ilanavis.html * waves at Richie *
