two-three person multiplayer - buy Steam or DVD?

There are only ~two of use who want to do multiplayer. If I uby the steam version can i host locally or will i be stuck using someone elses server.

I guess my questions are:

will we be able to play offline together just with our computers connected together or will we have to use the online servers. .

Can I just host my own game with a "normal" computer?

OK this game is awesome. Now I have to figure out how to do 3 screens. on to another forum area i guess.

And find an event to participate in this friday or saturday!
