Using existing road .shp's from openstreet and other sources

I'm curious if the data imported interferes with terrainbuilder's ability to properly read the database. For example names of real roads and other integers, and values exist on these downloadable .shp files. So when you go to assign the roads ID's and values that are acceptable to terrainbuilder and the game engine in the database, can you just leave the pre-existing values there? If you can't, how do you get rid of them?
