msportdan 10 Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) Hiya guys. Ive just made the crossover to A3 from 2, and im loving it so far, great improvement. But im in that process (everyone knows ) of setting up gfx. In arma 2 i believe there was a best "minimal" distance it was best to set the visibility range, due to scopes and stuff (1600 i think) is there a best minimal range for A3, i have around 2800, but im only getting around 40-45 (50 good area) on showcase infantry. But on the Nato base showcase level im in at around 30fps (in the base). Im running x8 fsaa as it doesnt seem to affect my fps with it off and full smaa or fxaa instead . Visibility is the obvious killer for me and wondering what is a needed value. Ive noticed a few Texture mods at mid range released, wont this help me with FPS and create better looking hills etc? What one is the best>? Cheers my settings http://i57.tinypic.com/2mq3mz4.jpg (216 kB) http://i57.tinypic.com/n4jyuw.jpg (211 kB) Edited May 22, 2014 by msportdan
CaptainAzimuth 714 Posted May 22, 2014 For visibility, it depends on your system, and how many frames you can deal with. I can live with around 40-60 frames. However, for realism now... Full view distance is required. I don't see 20000 viewdistance being a locgical thing at the moment, until BI finds a way to introduce better ways of viewdistance in general. (I still use full view distance though. :D) Up to you really, and what works best.
msportdan 10 Posted May 22, 2014 Do you think around 40 wil be ok for SP? In busy areas...
hades198 10 Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) As far as realism goes, I think that view distance is quite unimportant till it restricts visibility and gameplay. At which point, when the ability to spot contacts/landmarks etc becomes impaired depending upon the obvious limitations of your unit (infantary with/without optics v attack helo with gunner optics) is when realism is reduced IMHO. I know that sounds quite general and that it relies upon whether youre playing single/multi player, and the quality of AI units you're facing. However I've found the best thing to do is lower your settings and ramp the view distance up as much as you can without having to resort to a pixelated edition of arma, that said I don't know anyone who doesn't love shiny graphics, so your other option is toy around with your settings and find a niche for each type of gameplay. Thus for infantry combat a lower view distance and higher quality and for long distance engagements (air>armour) a higher view distance with slightly lower quality settings. I guess in the end it really depends on how you play, if you love whoring a particular play style, set your graphics accordingly, or if you like a bit of everything, work out different 'presents' or find a nice balance between it all. Sorry I don't have any figures to hand out, but this is how I see the topic. EDIT: as for FXAA if you can live without it, there's a good chance that you can wrangle out a few more frames at longer distances and during periods of continuous explosions and possibly fog... but the last one is a bit of a assumption.
