alx 20 Posted August 17, 2002 Detonator XP drivers version 30.82 now available from the Nvidia web site. I've installed them on my Win98SE system and they appear to be stable. No improvement in performance noticed with OFPR but YMMV. Happy hunting Alx

advocatexxx 0 Posted August 18, 2002 Since Nvidia uses detonator for all of their video cards it's natural to assume that new versions of these drivers focus on updating their new cards rather than Geforce 2s and down. I for once haven't downloaded their detonator since December 2001. Why ? Because all the newer drivers since then seem to detect a new video device on my machine and call it "nvidia dual view" and treat it as a separate video card, which causes tons of havoc. Besides, a cute little 3rd party application called "nvidia refresh rate fix" which lets you set the refresh rates for particular resolutions doesn't work with drivers after december 2001. This may not be so great since Flashpoint lets you choose what refresh rate to use, but almost all other games do not, and it's unhealthy spending hours in front of a 60Hz screen when it's capable of 120. Besides, I doubt I would see any significant FPS rate increase.

I have a GeForce4 Ti4200 64Mb card and so the drivers have been stable for me (their optimised for GeForce4 cards after all). So the old adage that you should update your drivers for everything (video, sound, chipset) to optimise performance goes out the window a little. Perhaps another adage should overarch the above, namely, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. As a related aside, I used to have a GeForce2 GTS 64Mb and updated to the above card (in preperation for Resistance). It resulted in a very healthy improvement in all my graphics for all games. Since you can buy them for a relative song on the internet, I would recommend it as a cheap way of extending the life of your PC. Alx
