upgrading hardware for arma3

Recommended Posts

hi everybody,

i got an old crappy computer and wanted to upgrade the hardware step by step, because i m stuying and dont have the money to upgrade all of it at the same time. soooo where to start...

my computers hardware:

mainboard: ASROCK N68C-S UCC

cpu: AMD Athlon II X4 635 Processor 2.90ghz

graphic card: ATI Radeon 4600 Series (damn cant see the correct description at the moment... need to shut down the computer and open it to check exactly the name of the card)

ram: 4gb DDR3 1600 pretty new RAM

hdd: shitty hdd i guess..

so at the moment i actually CAN play arma3 with this crappy computer (in solo mission or empty servers i can play pretty well, but when playing wasteland mod for example and there are 40-60 players on the server and the server running for a while, i got about 5-10 fps and it s not really playable... ;) )

so what do you think, is the best way to improve my computer step by step? what hardware needs to be upgraded first? (every month i can buy one hardware for 100-250 eur, depends on the month) so where to start? whats most important for arma3? whats my computers weakest spot?

Thanks for your help,

Personally, I'd go for an intel board and processor. The lower Intel chips can make better use than some of the higher AMD CPUs. Your PSU and board are the first things I'd update, then your CPU and GPU. Then eventually, to give you a little more I'd get at least 8gb RAM (:

That's it in very basic terms. I noticed a massive difference when I went from an Intel i3 to i7, the game got more FPS and rendered more in the distances, for example.

sticky.

anyway, you could monitor your system while playing using msi afterburner, it can make a graph with both GPU load and fps, if fps goes down and the gpu load goes down you're cpu limited, if fps is low and gpu use is 100% you're gpu limited.

you could test the effect of a gpu upgrade by running the game at a very low resolution (800x600 or something), that'll perform like a decent gpu at full resolution.

i bought a new psu last year, because dayz and arma2 killed my last one last summer ;D

do you really think i should upgrade my board first? if i go and upgrade my board, it wont fit with the old CPU (because i wanted to switch to intel, but even amd would be a different socket i guess) so i have to buy a new CPU at the same time i guess?

so wouldnt it be better to get a new hdd or graphic card to improve my fps to at least PLAYABLE at multiplayer arma3? (i read last year that arma2 got a profit from a fast hdd, dunno if it's the same with arma3..)

thanks for your help:)
