Linux/bsd/unix servers?

Recommended Posts

Will we ever see them?

There area few people I know with nice connections who'd be only too happy to host a server for the (currently smallish) Irish Flashpoint commuinity if there was a beard server.

Any word?

Even simple *n*x compiles of the exes and dlls etc. would be grand.

Is it something to do witht eh protection system?

Copy protection has nothing to do with it, since the existing dedicated server for Windows isn't copy-protected either, and runs without the CD.

The problem is that the original OFP network code was built using Microsoft's proprietary DirectPlay API, which is part of DirectX.

There are now two implementations to choose from in OFP, one using the existing DirectPlay code, and another one using Winsock, which is compatible with Berkeley Sockets that is native to UNIX-based platforms. It should therefore now be possible to port the dedicated server to UNIX/BSD/Linux.

Give the developers at BIS a bit more time, I'm sure the server you want is on its way.

I've patience, plenty of it, was just wondering smile.gif

Does it use UDP or TCP ports?

I ask because I might be able to bounce itout through the firewall in college and host my own server.

Aside: It only uses one port, am I right? It doesn't need a seperate query port or seperate TCP/UDP?
