Situation Background: (lots of info, click spoiler to view)

It is July 2013 and months into a large scale conflict between Ardistan and its neighbouring countries Takistan and Karzeghistan, which are part of a U.N. authorised coalition with NATO forces including the United States, United Kingdom and Chernarus. Beginning with an invasion of Karzeghistan by Ardistani troops that brought international condemnation, US and UK forces have been deployed into Takistan along with forces from other countries. After an initial conflict to expel Ardistani troops from Karzeghistan, a ground assault followed which resulted in Karzeghistan being liberated by coalition forces, who then advanced into Ardistani territory. Aerial and ground combat is now confined to Ardistan, Karzeghistan and areas along Takistan's border.

Ardistan leader Mahmud Faruq al-Rashid has now succeeded in deploying Scud missiles aboard mobile launchers and has initiated a series of attacks on coalition military targets situated in Takistan. These mobile Scud TELs (transporter erector launcher) have proven to be extremely elusive targets, so the coalition has decided on a different approach to dealing with the challenge. Up until now large numbers of sorties have been flown into Ardistan looking for fixed Scud launch sites and manufacturing facilities, however it has been discovered Ardistan has chosen to rely solely on mobile launchers. Due to generally poor weather conditions it has been difficult for the coalition to detect and attack mobile TELs before they have launched their Scuds.

In an effort to seek and destroy these Scud TELs, coalition forces have mounted Combat Air Patrols over kill boxes where the TELs are suspected to be. One of these kill boxes is an area in Reshmaan Province, North East Ardistan where it is believed they will be set up to fire over the border into Takistan to the east. However, these CAPs have not had the desired effect due to the aircraft's targeting equipment being unable to identify and acquire TELs, as they cannot distinguish their IR and radar signatures from trucks and other electromagnetic matter in the Ardistan desert. The decision has been taken to send in Special Operation Forces on the ground to seek out and destroy the Scud TELs by painting targets with laser designators for coalition strike aircraft.

Mission objectives, special tasks and resources: (lots of info/images, click spoiler to view)

Mission objectives

You are tasked with 3 objectives for this mission:

1. The first objective for all patrols in this mission is to neutralise three Communications/Anti-Aircraft facilities situated outside the Area of Operation (each patrol is assigned one facility). Each facility has a tower that will need to be taken down to disrupt communication between enemy forces. As well as these radio towers there will also be AA weaponry that will need to be destroyed. Neutralising these sites should prevent enemy strike/interceptor aircraft from being scrambled whilst also making the area safer for coalition aircraft to operate.

2. Seek and destroy mobile Scud TELs by laser designating them as targets and calling in air strikes. You will be required to destroy six mobile Scud TELs to complete this objective.

3. To contact central command and carry out their mission, the Scud TELs rely on communication and targeting data transmitted via a network of fibre-optic cables which run from the capital and under the MSR. There are marked junction points spread along the MSR which you will need to find and damage using demolition charges. This will at least massively delay any planned launches from Scuds in the area and at best stop them completely. This objective requires that you destroy 8 cable junction points along the MSR to be successful.

Special Tasks

The Pilots will be responsible for flying the patrols into enemy territory and any subsequent inserts for reinforcements. They will also be tasked with flying strike aircraft (F-35B) that will be used for attacking designated Scud TELs and any other airstrikes called in on enemy positions by the patrols.

The HQ Element will have 2 main uses. Firstly they will provide a communications link between the patrols and pilots. They will be positioned roughly half way between Saraam Airbase and the AO to ensure communications can be relayed over long distance back to base. Secondly all airstrike requests will go through HQ, they will decide whether to accept or deny any requests from patrols for airstrikes and will assist in guiding the aircraft to the location of the target. HQ will also be in charge of assigning radio channels to patrols and pilots.

Resources

Resources available to all patrols are rotary (transport) and fixed wing (strike) air support. There are also land rovers available that can be transported by chinooks to your drop off point along with your patrol. The main purpose of these land rovers is to give you a means to take more supplies/ammunition with you. You may also use them for transport into the AO after assaulting the Communications facilities, although this is not very recommended as it will make you a much larger and easier to hit target. There is a fairly large selection of weapons to choose from however Night Vision Goggles and Thermal Imagers are restricted, only the commander of each patrol is supplied with this equipment and it is up to them if they want to redistribute it to another patrol member.

Mission Summary

Based on SAS/Delta Force Scud hunting operations in Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War. Your mission as 3 patrols of D Squadron 22 SAS Regiment is to firstly insert by helicopter at night into Reshmaan Province and neutralise 3 communications/AA sites surrounding the AO (optional task that will make it safer to call in air support once done - does not appear on the task list) before moving to establish an observation post along the Main Supply Route. Once in position you should observe the MSR for mobile Scud TEL vehicles and marked cable junctions along the roadside. Once all scuds (6) and all cable boxes (8) are destroyed, return to Saraam airbase.

The mission reminds me of bravo two zero,a true story in which andy mcnab and his sas team went in iraq to find scud missiles.

Parts of the mission are inspired by the story of Bravo Two Zero's mission, such as establishing an Observation Post along the MSR and looking for fiber optic cable junctions and mobile Scuds to destroy. As said in the mission description and situation background bit, the mission and back story is all based on/taken from/inspired by the scud hunting operations in the Gulf War and Bravo Two Zero's mission. If you read the Situation Background bit you'll probably notice the story is pretty much what happened in the Gulf war but with the names of some of the countries and locations changed :)
