brgnorway 0 Posted July 7, 2002 Here's the story: I work as a night manager at a hotel. Every now and then the accidental tourist which happens to be an american proudly claims: "I'm Norwegian You know!". I find this a bit amusing you see, because there's absolutely nothing with his appearence that even remotely resembles any norwegian I have ever met. Far from it. This made me a rather curious so I visited the homepage of "Sons of Norway", an organisation for americans of norwegian origins. Funny thing is that they organize meals called "smörgĺsbord" wich by the way is a swedish term. It seems to me that the sum of all the social activities they have are......well...perhaps a bit over the top. It's like trying to be more royal the the royalty himself. To me all of this a static and distilled view of being "norwegian". Simply a myth if you ask me. Is this something special for americans of scandinavian origins, or does it apply for anglo-americans and spanish-americans etc.?
ralphwiggum 6 Posted July 7, 2002 i see it as human nature. america is a country composed of many ethnicities, and diversities. Great thing about diversity is that you get to learn about other aspects of societies. but what comes along with diversity is need for identity. when you have so many things that are given to you, you suddenly realize that there are numerous things that are around you, but you can't find the definition of you. i.e. identity crisis. so all those Norwegian Americans claims are a call for identity search. This is not just related to Norwegian-Americans, but also in many different ethnic groups. mostly, if first generation is an immigrant, second generation tries to forget his ancestory, but third generation tries to seek his/her ancestry. It's identity thing.

After all an english friend of mine described Norway as not very different from a us state.

I also had an identity crisis until I decided to become a Ninja.
