There is a helicopter transport role and boats available for getting around the island.- Supports up to 17 players (two 8-man squads and a helicopter pilot - see player slots for roles).- Supports JIP (using SHK Taskmaster 2).- The mission requires there be at least 1 person in each of the 2 Marine squads (some tasks require both Marine teams to have a member in the game to enable their completion). Situation Background: (lots of info, click spoiler to view) In the last month hostile forces have taken control of an airbase on the Island of Thirsk, this is a very volatile situation but we feel if we did not step in now then things could become a lot worse than the news I have for you today. In response to this threat to the island of Thirsk and surrounding countries, Marines from 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit and Marine Special Operations Regiment (MSOR) amongst others have been deployed in the area from the Khe Sanh Expeditionary Strike Group (which is currently positioned to the South East of the island). Units have been flown out from the USS Khe Sanh to a small isle South West of the main island called Ilmarinen, and have set up an FOB and forward airfield there which will currently be the staging area for all special operations. We are currently able to do this as the enemy have run low on resources in the area rendering their air power amongst other things useless, which has led to US air superiority in the region thereby cutting off their supply routes. The enemy seem reluctant to call in reinforcements from outside the region for fear of escalating the situation further, although as you're about to learn, they have already done so. In the early hours of this morning January 10th 2013, a United States Air Force C130J delivering supplies to the USMC FOB on Ilmarinen was shot down and crash-landed on Thirsk. There has since been no contact with the 4 man flight crew but we have have had reports that the enemy claim to have taken two alive, unfortunately that means the other two are most likely KIA and possibly executed by the forces that discovered the crash site. A reconnaissance flight that went out at around 05:00AM today after the incident took place, saw an enemy light vehicle convoy moving South East away from the crash site and heading back toward their airbase, it also confirmed that although damaged the plane looks to have been crash landed well and so it seems unlikely that the crewmen would have been killed by the crash. We expect that the flight crew would have stayed with their plane due to the harsh weather conditions of the island, so we believe this convoy has picked them up as POW's and has taken them back to their base. The remaining captured flight crew will be hereafter referred to as "the package". (tl;dr summary - Russian forces have overtaken an airbase on Thirsk island and have shot down a USAF C130, 2 pilots have been taken as POW's and you need to rescue them) Your Objectives and intel: (lots of info, click spoiler to view) Your Objectives and intel The primary objective of your mission will be to infiltrate the base, locate the package and exfil by helicopter, returning them to the USS Khe Sanh where they will be treated and repatriated, however, there are a few other things we need you to do while you're out there. Firstly we have discovered an outlying enemy camp East of the town of Thirsk, for this task you will insert by boat then proceed to the camp on foot. The camp lies on top of a large hill which provides a good observation post to the enemy and will provide their HQ with early warning of any threat to them.Because of this it is vital you clear the area of hostiles before you continue with the mission. Since the base will likely be in communication with this camp, it will be worth seeing if you can find any intel while you're up there, anything extra you can find out will help you plan better for what comes after. Once you have left the camp you will by either foot, boat or helicopter (this will be your choice, there may still be mobile enemy AA on the island but if you fly in there low enough, and I mean tree top level, they should be easily avoided due to the dense woodland covering most of the area) proceed to the crash site where you will retrieve the black box from the C130. The data stored in that unit is critical to finding out the cause of the incident. While you are there you will also look for any possible evidence to aid you further in finding the location of the package. You won't want to hang around here long though, the enemy will likely expect us to visit the area so they may be running patrols and it is also likely there could be an enemy presence on arrival, because of this make sure any helicopter LZ is a good distance from the area and be well prepared. You will only receive air support on this mission if there is an airborne threat, which we aren't expecting but will be ready for regardless. A Marine AV8B will be on standby at Ilmarinen for the duration of the mission to ensure a fast response. No air to ground sorties will be flown due to putting the lives of the POW's at further risk, we don't know their exact location or if they may have been moved elsewhere, and besides we think you'll be able to take care of anything on the ground yourselves. Your pilot will provide all inserts and exfils that are requested but must also be available to fly out reinforcements to you should you suffer any losses. From the crash site you will proceed to locate the package, there is a perimeter wall that surrounds the base and there are only three ways through it, two entrances are roads leading in on the North side, the other is a gate on the beach to the South of the base (see image 1). Expect all entrances to be guarded both on land and water. Once one of the teams has located the package, they will get it and themselves out of there to a specified RV immediately. The other team will have one last objective in the area; locate and destroy what is left of the enemy's ammo resources by planting explosives on the cache. Once the team is clear and the cache is destroyed they will rendezvous with the other team at the RV point and together make their way to the LZ for exfil (team leaders will decide on an LZ). There will be UH-60's and CH-47's available to bring yourselves and the package back to the Khe Sanh, if both men die we've failed, so protect them with your lives and see they make it out of there safely. The base will have a significant infantry presence but it looks like they don't have much in the way of vehicles as most are out of action or destroyed, because of their infantry numbers expect any group that you may engage to call for backup if they suffer losses. This could also work to our advantage if some of the their standby forces are preoccupied when one of our teams moves in to secure the package. You will fly out at 09:30AM; due to the time of year and location your mission won't start in daylight, but there shouldn't be any need for NVG's as it will be close to sunrise (except also due to the location and time of year, the sun never comes above the horizon). Weather conditions are forecast to be fairly clear skies and average visibility. That is all. image 1 - enemy base image 2 - map Mission Summary: Tasks 1. Staging: Fly out to the FOB on Ilmarinen to prepare your teams and kit yourselves out according to your class. Team leaders make sure your units are properly equipped. 2. Insertion & Assault: Deploy from Ilmarinen by boat and travel East to the main island, this task will be best done by boat insert as it will lower the chances of the enemy being alerted before you reach the area. Reinforcements can be brought in by air as it is assumed you will be already compromised. When on land head towards and assault the outlying enemy camp in Ylåmylly, the camp lies on top of a hill so this will most likely be a close up engagement. When the area is clear of hostiles check around for any intel that may help with the mission. 3. Recovery: Fly to the crash site and be careful with your choice of LZ as there may be enemy present on your arrival. When the area is secure move to the aircraft and retrieve the flight recorder from it. 4. Intel Search: When you have retrieved the flight recorder from the aircraft, check the area around it for any evidence or dropped intel, again as enemy have been here you may find something that will help the mission. 5. Infiltration, Rescue & Escape: Move back south to the Russian airbase where it is believed the package is being held, infiltrate the base in any way you and your team leaders see fit. It would be advised to firstly eliminate any hostile heavy weaponry (e.g. armoured vehicles) if there is any in the base to avoid it engaging you after the package is in your company, also try to eliminate at least the majority of the infantry there before making a rescue attempt to make sure the rescue and escape from the base goes as smoothly as possible. 6. Destruction: Whilst one team secures the package and evacuates the area, the other will locate the arms cache. The cache must not be blown until the package team is safely out of the base area (they will be told when they are). 7. Rendezvous: Once the cache is destroyed both teams (if they are separated) will rejoin at the RV. This will provide greater security to the package and ensure they are well defended should you be engaged again. The RV is a remote location in the woods at the ruins of an old church, which will provide you with cover should it be needed. 8. Extraction: From the RV both teams will proceed to the LZ which is not a fixed location and will be chosen by the team leaders and pilot. Make sure wherever it is that you are certain that area is secure and clear of enemies, and do not call in the extraction until you have waited and are sure it is safe. Upon returning to the Khe Sanh the mission will end. Win Condition: At least one of the the captured flight crew is returned alive to the USS Khe Sanh. Loss Condition: Both flight crew members are KIA. Blufor Resources: Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC boats), RHIB, UH-60 Blackhawks and CH-47 Chinooks. CAS will be scrambled to react only to any airborne threats. Player slots/roles available: Teams: 2d Marine Special Operations Battalion Raider 1-1 Team Leader -- Assistant Team Leader -- Marksman -- Corpsman -- AT Operator -- Operator -- Operator -- Operator -- Raider 1-2 Team Leader -- Assistant Team Leader -- Marksman -- Corpsman -- AT Operator -- Operator -- Operator -- Operator -- Condor Transport Pilot -- Issues: No known issues, tested a few times and has been run as a mission night on a dedicated server.
